Should I??
So, I should probably be posing this question in the 8-series forum and I may also do that. I’m mainly in contemplation mode right now.
Give up my MY23 loaded 840i coupe for a M2? Dealer thinks he’s going to have one available in next few days. I haven’t seen build sheet, but it’s BSM which is a must have for me. Check out my garage for pics of the 8.

My answer to anyone who asks the question is “no”.
My reasoning: if you have to ask, then it’s not for you. If you’re fine with an 840i, that’s probably the better car. If you were fine with the automatic transmission, then that’s probably the better one. Why change. |

Agreed: if you are asking it's not what you really want. Given that clarity what dealer is this? I really want to get a BSM M2 and I'm sick of waiting

I doubt there are a lot of people cross shopping these two cars. The 8 is much bigger and I haven't driven one but my guess is that it's far more comfortable and a more up-market interior. The M2 would be a step down in luxury and comfort but a step up in sportiness.
If I somehow found myself the owner of an 840 I would be 100% looking to move to an M2 because the 8 series is not my style and the M2 suits me perfectly. At the same time I have friends that if they happened to own M2s they would be 100% looking to move to an 8 series. It all depends on what you personally want in a car.

Was at the stealership yesterday and got to play with an M8 and an M4.
I’d say I agree, the M8 was like a limo. The M4 was pretty cool, but I’d prolly go M3. I’m happy with my M2, but the M8 and M4 have some awesome options I wish were available on the M2. You know the ones… Oh well, time to go drive my lowly M2 😉 |

Sewell BMW of Plano (Texas). Ask for Mark Sanders. Great guy, great dealership. I purchased my 8 from another lot of theirs.

You haven't really given us any information to guide you. Some good places to start might be - What don't you like about the 8 series? - What about the M2 appeals to you? You might actually be driving the wrong car for your preferences, but we don't know what those are yet. |

Appreciate all the feedback. Going to plead temporary insanity here plus a great love of cars especially BMW. I just really like the new M2, but can’t give up the supreme luxury of the 8. Plus it’s plenty fast with rumbly exhaust. Following break in it really shines performance wise. She will burn out and even power slide…and again luxurious to boot..so crisis averted :-D

There is really no comparison between the M2 and 840i other than both being manufactured by BMW. One is performance, the other luxury ride of a larger car. As stated, if you are asking people here, the answer is simple, the M car. If you had an M8 or M8C, then at least you would be comparing fruit of the same type (though the M8 is just not well supported in the M lineup). Last edited by M_Power Rob; 11-25-2023 at 09:53 PM.. |

I like the Coupe more than the Gran Coupe, which i thinks it's just ugly. The 6 series Gran Coupe had a much more successful design overall...
But even the Coupe i think it's a bit aged now... especially compared to the G87. The M2 will be much better to drive. The 8 has more cachet. So what do you want? A driver's car or a more upscale model? Even in terms of space the 8 won't have too much advantage... I don't see too much point in it if it doesn't have a V8. Of course most of us are biased, but we can always find a rational thinking behind supporting a choice... |

At least the front has aged a bit. The rear end is still a killer.

I crossed shopped the M2 and a similar car to the 8 series. At least in terms of luxury. Was considering either the Jaguar F-Type or the Lexus LC500. The reason i ended up not choosing either of those is because i wanted something more sporty. While you CAN do sport things in both of the aforementioned cars, i knew i would have a more sportscar experience in the M2 while i'd have more of a luxury GT experience in the Jag and Lexus.
Whenever people ask this question is usually tells me that their current car doesnt have something that the car they are looking at does. In this case i'd bet just the more sports car driving experience is what you are missing. As much as we all love luxury, theres something that a sports car can give you that a luxury car cannot. However what i do really like about the M2 is that if you spec it with the standard seats, the car can still be quite luxurious. I dont have mine yet but i've test driven a few and the new M2 is incredibly compliant on normal roads, especially in normal mode. I can easily see myself driving long distances in this car when i get it and having no issues. If you can, get down to a local dealership and see if they will let you test drive one. See if the more driver focused experience is something you want to live with or if its something you only want on the weekends. |

Front is my favorite! Never gets old. Plus my 2023 is LCI…no more chicken wire grill on front and added the lit grill.

If so, sign up a track day somewhere and drive an M2 (or M3/M4) in anger. More importantly, you'll get a teacher who will show you what it's all about and what these G8x cars can really do. Then you'll be able to make a real decision. Because no doubt, if you are coming from an 8, you'll be giving up a lot of amenities. You need to see if the upsides are worth those losses. |
