New (used) DME and CAS, No Start with Steering Lock and Key Symbols on Dash
I figured I would start a new thread to clarify my new problem. I just replaced the DME and CAS module in my 2006 330i since the one that was in the car was incorrect (MSV80 out of a 328i, my car is MSV70). The car started and ran alright, and it was drivable aside from several error codes.
Now, I can't get it to start. All I get is the yellow steering lock symbol, then when I put the key in I get a key symbol. If I press the start button, I get the airbag warning (I think that was on anyway) and the usual parking brake light. Then the ambient temp and clock show up, but nothing else. I tried to sync the DME and CAS in INPA, but nothing is happening. I just get this screen that I attached. Then I tried in Tool32. Again, nothing seems to happen, unless I'm going into the wrong menus. I haven't found any clear info on how to fix this issue. Did I get a bad CAS module, or am I just doing this wrong? Edit... added picture of INPA screen. Forgot to attach the screenshot on my other computer, so here's the picture I initially took.

I also want to mention that currently there are NO error codes under MSV70 or CAS.
Also, I'm just discovering these parts came from an E60. Is that a problem, or are these still compatible? I tried to reset the ELV counter again in Tool32, and it said it went through, but nothing happened. Still can't start the car or get it to "key on".

The steering wheel is not locked. I haven't had any issues with that.
Right, the PNs are the same between the E90 and E60, but I just wanted to make sure.

Will do. I just downloaded ISTA from that Mega link, so once I get it set up I'll do all that. Thanks!

Ok, so I attempted to default code the CAS using this prodedure, and I get the following error after selecting "execute job".
I added the SP Daten files to the NCSexpert folder for E90/E89 and E60 (had to add E60 to get past the first error it gave me) but I can't get past this error. Also, any idea what files to install for ISTA? I can't find the installation files.

daten e89 files
I'm looking for the sp daten e89 files to fix an ELV issue on my e92 but all of the links to the software have been deleted, does anyone have the files that they can share with me?

Look in the Daten folder on the Mega link that was posted a couple posts back. They're all in there.

Look at the part numbers BMW uses the same engine across
a number of body styles. The programmable nature of the modules means they can also use these across a number of models. The Bimmergeeks.net download should cover most of the gas cars(6 cylinder) without the need to update datens. Better to run Inpa first to see if you have set up the software correctly. The installation files are contained in the downloads. The downloads must be unpacked from there zipped states with an unzipping program such as 7zip. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1581663 Last edited by ctuna; 05-04-2020 at 06:46 PM.. |

I chose E89, but it shows E60. I assume that's due to the VIN on the modules, which are from an E60. I'm installing ISTA currently, so I'll see what I find out once it's up and running. If that fails, I'll have to reinstall NCS expert from scratch and get it running properly.

The E60 hardware is the same but the software is different. The part number only refers to the hardware. I'm willing to bet it might eventually start but it's going to end up with a bunch of errors without a reflash.
If you can't get the DME to boot up (because of the ELV counter) then you're not going to be able to flash it to the E90 software. And you probably can't reset the ELV counter because the E60 DME is expecting a gateway module which doesn't exist on the E90. Maybe ISTA will be able to do that anyway, I don't know. But you really do need to reflash the DME, not just code it. Besides that, some things such as the power class cannot be recoded, and if the power class on the E60 DME doesn't match your car it's going to run in limp mode. Really the better way to go is to clone your original MSV70 onto your donor, and leave the original CAS/Keys as they were before. MSV70 is trivial to clone so I don't know why people don't do it more often. Last edited by hassmaschine; 05-05-2020 at 02:54 PM.. |

I'll have to do a little research, but RealOEM shows the same PNs for software and hardware between the E60 and E90. Worst case, someone local has the DME and CAS with the keys, do you think that's a better option? I'm really lost here, I'm new to the whole coding part of BMWs.

Reset the ELV counter in ISTA, no difference. The CAS definitely powered off and on, so I know it responded.
I think the next step is to see if I can get the CAS and DME synchronized. Or, should I try to reprogram the DME software?

My advice is to find someone with the proper tools to write your new DME ISN to your old CAS, and the just replace only the DME. This is the fastest and the best approach that will solve your issue. The problem is that your CAS is searching for ELV and your car doesn't have one, or if it has it supplies a different response to the CAS than what it is expecting.
Any other way to solve this issue involves even more tools, electronic and soldering skills. After that if you want, and I suggest, you can update your new DME with the ZB number of an E90 DME. |

Well that's the problem... I don't have the original CAS. I just have the incorrect CAS.
However, I am able to source the CAS/DME/key fob combo from a 2006 330i (same car as mine) if that will correct this issue. I found a local yard who has the stuff for me.

Try flashing e9x software onto the dme and cas with Winkfp. After that's done, copy FRM VO and write it to CAS. Then code the car to default settings.
