Display error?

I just notice the trip data display for consumption value is "gal/h." Gallons per hour? It should be "mi/gal." 1) as shown with the car idling the number goes down; if it were gallons/hour it would go up, and 2) it averages around 18 for my typical urban/suburban driving which seems right for mpg but not gal/h. Can anyone explain?

my display switch to that all by itself and will not show an avg once the car is parked.

I just figured it was another Operating System bug. My car has tons of them, so I was waiting for the next over-air update to fix.

This is normal. Vehicle switches to a volume/time basis when not moving. Once moving will return to distance/volume.

it’s such a strange thing to put on the dash. it was kind of cool to see the 0.2gal/h increase of idle in neutral with your clutch in vs out, but it’s getting a little old for me now and wish i could turn it off

I just wish we could have normal things like other cars. Maybe an odometer that stays on.....an MPG indicator somewhere on the 4 feet of display....a tach that I can see and use....

With a display so large, why have to scroll thru everything? They're full of stylized icons instead of usable date. Reminds me of how iPhones are nowadays. Huge screens, but all the controls are minimal sized!

Haha!!

I told this to the BMW Team. I wonder if they listen....

It seemed that the engineer that I got was more interest in electronics, software and quality lapses.

He sorta just paused and patiently listened with the other stuff. I had another friend that used their support email to complain about the oil cooler situation. Probably doesn't hurt to tell BMW directly. The dealers are not going to pass that sort of thing on.

This is the email they want feedback sent to:

Yes, it messed me up at first too. Once you start moving it goes to mpg again.

Mine does & it also shows me mpg & avg mpg since last fuel stop. At least that's how I have my screen configured.

funny, when i picked up the phone for their little "feedback survey", the first thing i mentioned was the exposed cooling and the person just listened and didnt say anything. as soon as i mentioned that carplay drops and bluetooth occasionally screws up, he was asking me all sorts of questions about how many times, what conditions, etc.

..and then i went back to how much i dislike the screens and it was silence again. they dont seem to be interested in any design feedback

Sorry man, I should’ve been more clear. I understand the trip computer displays our total mileage and I could certainly leave that up all the time, but I meant the way it’s displayed when I turn on (or off) the car. I prefer to have my tire temps on one side and oil temp on the other and would like the odometer displayed in the bottom middle…you know, like every other car I’ve ever owned…

IDK, seems to me like fuel is cheap now compared to everything else.

Our carbon tax on gasoline at $0.14 per litre is only a small portion of the total tax cost (varies from about $0.40 in Alberta to $0.70 in BC) not much different to European countries and a much smaller levy than the total tax cost in Europe that averages around CAD$1.45 per litre

I haven't messed around with all the different configurations, but I have mine set up as below. Tbh, I rarely look at the gauge screen anyway so it doesn't bother me what is or isn't shown. I will say the cluster is set up the same in my wife's '22 X3MC with iDrive 7 (if that matters). My '11 Z06 only shows the odometer if I select it to be displayed, and I have to hit various buttons to display oil temp, coolant temp, tire pressures, etc. one at a time. My wife's previous '23 Grand Cherokee & '20 Grand Cherokee before that had many different configurations of the "cluster" and some didn't show the odometer.

I drive 500 mi (250 each way) on the weekends.
Cruise set on 85 mph, so not too bad as far as mileage goes. My daily commute is 28 mi round trip.

Sounds like you’re having a great time.
I’m averaging 21.7 city/highway combined since October delivery but I’m in Sport less than 10% of total miles.
YMMV
