Spare FOB use

Hey all,

We have a 23 M2 that got totaled.
We kept one of those keys.

Now bought a 24. Can the old key be programed to the new VIN?

Dealer item?

AFAIK, no. They have a serial number that is encrypted using the VIN or something along those lines.

If that is possible would need the car into the service department.

So that is a question to ask your service advisor.

Don’t believe it can be done. Is it too much hassle to return the key to the owner?

Owner is a salvage yard at this point. Just just trying to reuse a perfectly good key

I get it, but it can’t be done.

I’d try to return the key to the owner, but maybe time has come and gone, maybe you forgot you had the key when you sold the car… it happens

You'd have to pay the dealership $500 to code it.

Hate to break it to you bud, but even hundreds of exotic cars get totaled every week. Go on Copart and see for your self.

I'm 50% joking, but that's a relief(?).

Sorry, resume topic.

Curious, why is this not possible? If one loses a fob (or a fob is stolen) there has to be a away to unpair that fob from the vehicle. If a new fob is purchased, it can be paired to the vehicle. So why can't the OP's old fob be paired to the new vehicle?
