Not to be too argumentative, but on the M3, the sunroof adds 23kg (51lb). That's a larger car, so probably safe to say that on the M2 it'll be in the 40-45 lb range. The M2 is already a porker to begin with, so I would venture to guess that type of increase would have negligible impact on lap times.

Of course, I get that M cars are typically seen with CF roofs, and the concerns about helmet space.

They should just start over with this one. Unless the goal is to kill the M2 at all costs by making it horrendous and claim "sales have lowered too significantly to continue production."

So... to translate... you cannot have a standard roof w no sunroof and instead must upgrade to the costly cf roof? Other M cars offer moonroof deletes.

Well BMW knows how to make $ for sure... i would have opted against both and just went for a standard roof.

I will bet you $1,000,000 "most" will not be tracking the cars. Maybe 1 on 100 people.

The sunroof in the G87 is 20% larger than the one that was offered in the F87. “Larger” generally means more weight.

Oh, sure. But I'm speculating it's still smaller than the M3's sunroof.

ugh!

I was going to go with CF anyway, but forcing a sunroof is dumb.

Agreed...dammit! That CF roof is $2300!!!!!

M cars have slick roofs, man! Don't have to be CF, but no sunroof. To "be more spacious"??? Really??? By an X5!

Hell, this car already has a weight problem, adding that heavier roof only makes a real bad problem worse. So not cool.

My initial emotional reaction is "fuck them, I'm out....," but I'll just swallow they 2600. They got me with this trickfuckery.

I reserve the right to be mad and then be apologetic if they magically offer a free moonroof delete option.

It's as if they don't know the customer base. Or, do most customers really want the moon roof?

the bigger beef is not everyone wants a cf roof becuase they have long term durability issues like peeling

"Most"? BMW says 20% of M2's get tracked. That sounds about right to me.

The additional weight is minimal. The movement of the center of gravity lower by reducing weight up top is more significant than losing a few pounds. That said - it's still not much of a difference. Is any track rat really going to enjoy their track sessions less because they have a steel roof? Are their times going to suffer measurably? Probably not.

Less headroom is also factor in some not wanting a sunroof. If you're tall and wear a helmet, losing ANY headroom can be a real problem. Also a lot of people don't like sunroofs because they can be problematic. A lot of people enjoy an open roof and couldn't care less of some barely measurable "loss of performance" that may exist because of its presence.

Bottom line - it's great to have choice. If BMW is for some reason really sticking everyone not opting for the expensive CF roof with a sunroof, that's a really odd decision.

I’m torn, as I actually want a moon roof and excited that they are offering this for free. However, I prefer how the car looks with a carbon fiber roof. Perhaps I will get the moonroof and then cover it with gloss black wrap…

They really need to release more pictures of the car with various options.

If people who opt for a CF roof have to spend more money on it that kinda stinks, but if it's a $0 cost option then what's the difference..... Or has it already been announced that a CF roof will cost extra? Personally I'm a sunroof guy so it's not "bad news" to me at all. But I do like the way a CF roof looks!

Well, I use my sunroof every day more than any other feature so if I don't get the carbon roof, this would be the nice standard one for me.

After ditching my 1er convertible to buy my M2, I really appreciate having a Moonroof

It is more about fitting comfortably in the car with a helmet on.

I just love the spec sheet and options list available for this vehicle.

I can't think of a single item that it's lacking. Even frivolous fluff like a dedicated in-vehicle 5G connection w/ hotpot and colored heads-up display made the cut.. Good stuff 👍🏻

It's missing exterior and interior color choices when compared to virtually every car in BMWs lineup.

Sunroof standard. That's not even a real M car.

M life FTW.

Yea, well, my guess is cosmetic options such as those are intentionally blocked for strategic marketing reasons, so it doesn't eclipse the G80/82 in available features but they could of been stingy with the G87 and kept it as spartan as the F87 but they shared a decent variety of options this time around.. Credit where it's due..
