Injector Coding or Learning??
First of all, thanks to everyone who posts on this site. Was very intimidated to turn a wrench on my 335i when I first came to this forum. You guys have saved me thousands on repairs and eased my anxiety over maintenance on a BMW - so, my hats off to all of you who have shared info!
I've searched some threads, I'm sure it has been discussed but I cannot find my answer. I apologize in advance if I have clouded the forum with a similar thread. Here's my issue.. The "Cliff Notes" 09 335i coupe, stock, 101,000 miles. Still in love with her and hope to put another 101,000 on the odo. Replaced plugs at 80K (idiot, should have done coils at that time also…). Hit 100K, check engine light, misfire cyl#2 & cyl#5. Hit Bavauto up, order 6 new plugs and coils (OEM). Install, start, misfire, runs like crap. cyl#5 is DEAD… #5 Injector making a whistling noise. Replace #5 injector ($240 - ouch). Runs but still throwing same codes with slight misfire (not as bad, but still a misfire). So, after new plug, coil, injector on #5, I am at the end of my abilities. Call local Euro shop, book appt for 1 week out, read forum and learn that injectors must be coded. Drive car 150 miles over the course of 5 days waiting for my appt, problem slowly going away. Wake up today to go to my appointment, check engine light is off and she purrs like a kitten. My question: Did the computer "learn" the new injector? I canceled my appointment but wondering if that was a mistake. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I thank you all in advance for your time and attention! |

SI B 12 26 08
Engine Electrical Systems October 2008 Technical Service SUBJECT Injector Removal, Installation, and Replacement Procedures MODEL E60, E61, E71, E82, E88, E90, E92, E93 with the N54 and N63 engines INFormation During the removal and reinstallation or replacement of a fuel injector, it is very important that all of the recommended repair instruction procedures be followed precisely. For example, the N54 engine TIS Repair Instruction, RA 13 53 310 – Removing and installing or replacing an injector (N54), contains very specific information when performing repairs to the injectors on the N54 high-pressure fuel system. It is very important that the ignition coils be removed prior to opening any high-pressure fuel connection, as described in SI B12 27 08. Each injector is adjusted to the DME, based on its production calibration and cylinder position in the engine. If an injector is replaced, the individual calibration (adjustment value) must be read off of the new injector and entered into the DME. If the DME is replaced, all injector adjustment values must be entered into the replacement part after the programming / coding session. Failure to perform this procedure correctly could result in starting and engine performance problems. This procedure is found in diagnostics using the following path: Service Functions / Engine Electronics / Adjustment programs / Adjust injectors For each injector, the adjustment value is entered according to the installed cylinder position. Note: Due to conversions taking place in the DME control unit, the final digit of the values entered may differ slightly after they have been stored. This does not indicate an input or control unit error. |

Way above my pay grade to answer that, Sir. I went to my local BMW dealer, gave them my VIN and they handed me an injector, I installed it as the job seemed pretty straight forward. I gave no thought to the technical side of coding when I was under the hood. The car runs great (now, a week later). I have entered a realm that is way over my head…
The car runs strong, smooth, no check engine light but I take it from your expertise that I should still take it in for coding. My computer/coding experience and knowledge ends the moment I log onto my laptop! |

You need two more injectors to complete the repair
For example, if the engine has a misfire on cylinder 1, replace injectors for cylinders 1-3 if those injectors are not already index 11 or higher. If the injectors on that bank are already index 11 or higher, only replace the injector on the faulty cylinder. Use P/N 13 53 8 616 079 when replacing the injector(s). |
