There can be heavier snow falls here. And heavy enough to be a clearance problem.

But I don't have to drive. Retired so no work commute. I can just sit tight until the roads have been cleared which happens pretty quick here. Good road crews.

My sister a few months after she moved here from CA bought a 2024 BMW X4 M40i. I was tempted to get one but decided on the 230i xDrive because while it is not as winter capable as the X4 it is (I hope) good enough.

In Michigan I'd think you'd get real snow tires. All seasons are *no seasons* tires.

I say that with all season tires on my 230i xDrive but I live a substantial distance south of Michigan, in northwest Arkansas, and if I don't push it all seasons coupled with xDrive should be just fine.

I ran Michelin all season tires on my VW Golf TDi. The tires were exceptional. Until one day when rounding a turn on a frontage road in Williams AZ they weren't. Only by luck I managed to keep the car on the road and thankfully even though it went to the shoulder there was no culvert or guardrail to hit.

When I receive my M2 in the next few weeks I plan on it. I will be putting snow tires on it and will just wash it as soon as possible after any salt/sand bits get on the car. Will most likely avoid freezing rain and large snow accumulation type of conditions but no way I can let the car just sit in my garage until April.

I ran Conti DWSes on 2 RWD turbocharged BMWs through Chicago winters. They did great.

I’m a BIG fan of All Seasons. Now that I live in NC, I don’t see a huge need for anything but summer tires, unless I get tired of changing them every 3/4th year.

Drove my prior e36 M3 and then the 1M in Colorado winters for 15 years. Mainly out of necessity but also had some fun on certain streets and parking lots that won't be named. Blizzaks and similar dedicated winters are really impressive. But now I have the space and means to baby the M2, so no snow for her. Go have fun without me!

Had my fill of driving in snow.

Last pic is from behind the steering wheel of my 996 Turbo on a stretch of I40 between Moriaty NM and Santa Rosa NM. Encountered a small but rather heavy snow storm. Got in behind a slow moving big rig -- it was empty -- and managed to drive the 40 to 50 miles until I was on clear pavement again. Stopped at Santa Rosa for the night.

We have about 7" on the ground right now. The M2 is staying in the garage for at least a couple weeks now; has more to do with driving in salt and traffic hooligans with 4WD than fear of driving it. I disagree on the winter beater but each can choose what they want.

modern German rustproofing is pretty darn good but i do wash the undercarriage at least once a week. other people being idiots, yea, truth, but i live in the woods far from urban sprawl so ill roll those dice. wife has a ranger raptor on order so i guess we'll see how i feel when it arrives

Michigan is a tough place for both winter and summer tires. Sometimes near 60-70° days any time in the winter. Under 40° any given morning in the summer. I literally replace the summer tires with conti dws06's in the morning tomorrow. I do not drive my car in the snow typically though. Other car is an m235xi. Smashes through the snow.

M2 is a tough car in the snow. Even with snow tires. Just like any RWD car with 500 HP - It has too much torque for rear wheel drive to handle.
Believe me it drifts great but it needs some speed to do it. In urban environment with slow crawling speeds - it is rough. (even BMW skid school suggests putting the car in 3d for smooth drift around wet circle)
If the road is not ploughed - every incline is a struggle from a dead stop, even starting in 2nd gear and modulating the clutch to reduce wheel spin. Best results are with DSC completely off - MDM is bogging the car down at every start. Even then - you are the slowest car on the road with everyone beeping at you at every intersection with uphill start. (if you can keep momentum and speed and just through the car in to turns and intersections - it is a lot of fun - but not possible in nowadays urban driving)
Low clearance and low oil cooler are also considerations. Front scoop becomes a plough and collects dirt, rocks, sat and snow.
After a drive the rear wheels are packed with snow completely and if you park on the street they will freeze and the car will drive with unbalanced wheel feeling with chunks of ice in the rear wheels, so best park in the garage after to melt the wheel wells and brakes from ice.
Last point - it is a great fun drift car for snow covered parking lots - but again times are different. 20 years ago i could do it every day for a week after each storm. Last weekend in Boston - i had 30 minutes before salt trucks and ploughs and police started yelling at me. Every lot around me was cleared and salted within hours during a 24h storm (Gold from the sky for too many plough drivers and scared city majors)

At the risk of this turning political, I loved my CA (SF Bay Area) weather. What drove me away was California turning into Kommifornia...

Actually, while I now have to deal with snow and cold(er) temperatures I like the weather here in NW Arkansas.

Sure there are some days when I believe the M2 is best left in the garage. Either the temperature is too cold (car fitted with high performance tires) or there is frozen precip (along with salt/sand) on the road. But those days aren't that common and the bad (for driving) conditions don't last long.

For days when the M2 needs to stay put I have a 2nd car (2024 BMW 230i xDrive with all season tires) to use in case I need to go out. But being retired it is rare I need to go out in bad weather/road conditions. I can wait a day or two until the roads clear and dry.

yeah i had to leave my m2 in the garage the last two days, not so much due to the snow but more the plows pushing berms of snow into the road or the fallen trees... nothing like coming up to an intersection and a berm of snow a foot or two high going all the way across it and the only thing you can do is ram it. had my subaru accent for that thankfully

That’s what the 15 year old rav4 is for, going where and when the M2 shouldn’t

I don’t miss the Buffalo, New York winters in the least but May through October are marvelous. However, we are having a 🥶 winter in Arizona so far. Headed to Turks and Caicos next week for some relief.

Never heard of Turks and Caicos. Had to look it up. Ok. Now I see where you are going. Have a nice time!

Not Buffalo winter here but got almost 3" of snow the other day. And it is snowing now.

Damn cold. Currently -1F. Wind chill -17F. High only expected to reach 12F. Which is actually warm compared to what it got up to yesterday. Sunday's high was 3F. Speaking of AZ it is colder here (Benton County AR) than it is in Flagstaff AZ. That ain't right!

Of course the M2 stayed put. Did take the 230i xDrive out though. Car is pretty good in the snow, oh and cold. Used the heck out of the heated seat and steering wheel.
