I'm in consumer goods (development/production/sales), and the economy is already in the shitter.

I think there will always be a subset of people who want a fun sports car regardless of the economy and willing to pay for it, especially if it's rare/hard to get. After the coof went around, I feel like people are more YOLO with fun cars now. We'll see.

I am doubting this car will be that profitable, market is trending down pretty quickly and I am seeing barely used M4s with under 5k miles for under MSRP. I doubt the M2 will be much different, especially considering the styling isnt for everyone.

Only time will tell. BaT and Cars & Bids do wonders for new models that are in short supply, especially for models that were recently released.

Don't know where you are seeing this

I'm seeing barely used m3 comps with 3000 miles going for 15k above MSRP and still being insta sold

There will undoubtedly be flips, but I don't think they will be that profitable. Especially since first sales will be next summer, and the economic conditions could be much worse.

If the first auctions max at 55k, panic will ensue and allocations will be easy to get.

G87:

Dino models going buhbye.
Last gen with a manual tranny.
Same motor as m3.
Nothing even close to the performance in segment.

G87 will be the best selling M car of all time. They'll hold their value and will go down as one of BMW's all time greats. Battery boys in 2050 will give their left nut for one.

it's not really a 55K difference though, it's all about which one will depreciate at a more rapid rate, that's the one that will end up costing you more

and my bet is that the T will depreciate at lower rate than the G87 which I suspect will see a typical 10% per year loss rate now that the pandemic crazy market influence is waning

but I'll admit I don't have a crystal ball

if you can swing either and if you've never had a porsche go for the T, it may not actually cost you more and it will offer more driving enjoyment

worthy gamble for sure
