The issue occured just after connecting new lever and I was not able to drive.

Dealer didn't specify what caused the fault but I think that if there was any mechanical damage of cable, they would not accept free repair.

And if it was cable, restoring old lever should help, but it didn't.

It sounds like the M lever shorts out the electronics. Any reports of it being defectiv3 / is this part specifically for the M240i G42?

Thanks for reporting so others can avoid the headache

I noticed now that it's been removed from the M Performance accessories for the M240i.

If that's the case I don't get how they wouldn't cover it.

Yeah, if you bought it from the dealer, marketed specifically for the G42 and there's no warranty disclaimer for DIY installs, they should eat this one.

Per Ruebarb's PDFs -- BMW G42 M240i xDrive Coupe / Repair Manuals and Technical Data / -- 2 minutes should be given for the electrical system to shut down after the negative cable disconnect. Whether or not the "Driver Restraint Malfunction" light will show from tampering with an airbag before the 2-minute window passes is another question. For my own purposes, I will assume my 230i needs the same 2-minute wait period and plan to wait at least that long before wrenching anything.

The disclaimers are all in the warranty book you received with the car.

"What is not covered: Damage, including consequential, which results from negligence, misuse/improper operation of the vehicle, improper repair..."

If damage results from your improper installation of the part they are well within their rights to deny warranty coverage, even though it is an authentic part.

My point was, as Ron pointed out, they seemed to have pulled this part from being available for the G42 after many are likely calling the dealership with the same issue. Sounds like they mistakenly posted it as being compatible when it wasn't, resulting in frying electrical components even when installed following the instructions. So for those that bought it while it was posted as compatible for the G42, they should not be out any $ for BMW's mistake.

Why do you think they pulled the part? Because it's not on the Shop BMW site? That site has been super weird lately, it's been showing F44 Gran Coupe parts for weeks. I wouldn't use that as evidence they pulled it.

More than likely the part is completely fine and we have "operator error" on the install. Which they don't have to pay for.

Not much to go on bud, only what's in this thread. User error is also a possibility, but 2 people back to back? And isn't it just a plug? How do you mess that up? Unless it's improper power down/sleep related.

I spoke to my dealer today about the shift knob.

They said the part # shows it is for the G42, but when they run the VIN#, the part is not "listed" (may not be up to date) as compatible for my vehicle.

They said even if they installed the part at my request, since it is not listed for the VIN#, that any damaged caused by the part (not the installation) would not be covered.

They were also confused how it could have caused the damaged that the other members have experienced, said the ribbon cable was just power for lights and button presses.

This is similar to what my CA and the parts shop at dealership told me. When I asked for a list of M Performance parts I can order, they said we can only provide a list after we have the VIN#.

They won't let me order parts and do an at-port installation because they don't have a VIN# yet.

Just posting an update. I spoke with the service advisor again this morning. The control panel is back ordered and they won't be available until the 18th. They're going to provide me a loaner car until then.

BMW NA has started a case for this and I'm expecting to hear from them over the next couple of days.

For anyone thinking about getting the CF lever and installing it, do not do it.

For what it's worth, I know multiple people that put the M shift knob on their G42 and there was no such problems. My guess would be that the ribbon cable is very prone to damage and you just have to be very careful. That being said, it barely changes the look of the interior, so I'll be skipping it.

You can order the parts with your order at the time of ordering up until the day before it arrives at the destination port. No VIN required.

That was my first thought. But if ribbon was a problem, why dealer ordered whole panel instead of replacing just a ribbon.

After installing new panel, my dealer will do some extra testing to be sure that problem won't appear again.

I'll let you know, how my case has ended.

I wonder if they can order just the cable? Or maybe when the cable is damaged, it screws up the panel? Of course we're not going to be sure, but either way, I think I'd be ordering the panel or cable myself and trying to fix it if warranty won't. Probably save you at least 50%. There is something to be said for just having it all work, for sure though. Peace of mind and all that.

That is what I thought and understood after reading the posts in this forum.
For some reason, my dealership won't let me place an order for parts at the same time as my order for the car.
I'm just going to wait until I have a VIN# and then push them to take my order for the parts.

Not a big memer, but this loaner car begs for it.

"Mom, I want M240i!"

"Stop it! We have M240i at home!!!"

I have to laugh at this point. I was so excited to have the car for half the summer, now it's looking like I'll only get a few weeks before it starts turning to fall.

I made the mistake on my F80 when replacement my steering wheel. I unhooked the battery, pumped the brakes to get power off then reinstalled. Hooked it back up then noticed I had loose paddle. Pulled it off again without unhooking the battery and *poof* error. I had it cleared at a local shop rather than wait three days for the dealership to work me in.

Thanks man. I appreciate you sharing this. Unfortunately, my car only has 328 miles on it. I'd rather not have a replacement part that's got more age than the rest of the car.

I'm just going to have to wait. At least I have two days worth of fond memories. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll show up faster than she said.
