I've given up trying. The replacement will be in tomorrow, I'm going to go there and beg the service manager to have someone at least try.

They've been so secretive about everything they've done the car, I have no idea what methods they tried to troubleshoot this issue. They're basically telling me nothing so that if I take the car out of there, I have to start completely fresh somewhere else. I takes time a few independent BMW mechanics and they all said the same thing about this dealer. They do this and when people take their cars out of there they deny all future warranty claims because someone else worked on the car.

This doesn't seem right, but I have no other options at this point. I'm trying to just stay calm and let it happen. If I don't hear anything by the end of next week I have to cancel my trip.

Got the part from Lativa Monday, brought it to the dealer Tuesday, they installed it today and I got the car back. All is well. Once the Service Manager got involved, there was a sense of urgency on their end. Strange that I was first told he was on vacation until the 22nd, but he told me he only started there a week ago. Either way, he helped me get this issue resolved.

They ordered another replacement for me so I'd have a brand new one, because the one I have isn't new. It works fine and there are no cosmetic defects, but I'd rather have a new one anyway.

That $250 shift knob has turned into a nearly $2,000 mistake.

At least I'll make my trip.

Just wanted to update this thread now that the saga is almost over.

Wednesday I dropped my car off at the dealer. They got a second new replacement for the center control unit.

They swapped it in and everything is working. The reason I'm saying this saga is almost over, is because they refused to install the shift lever.

Not only that, but they put it in writing on the service report and also advises, in writing, that I not try to install it again.

This is so crazy to me that BMW wouldn't cover this. It's such a fickle thing that the dealer isn't even willing to install it and they put that in writing!

We'll see what BMW NA has to say about this.

I hate to say it but that dealership has major issues. I would be finding another dealership moving forward.

The carbon interior and gear shift is an official OEM BMW M part that you're installing. End of discussion for me. Plus it's a simple piece of plastic and a 5 minute install. If they can't do that then imagine what they're like changing a spark plug!

I'd take all of my business elsewhere.

I had this same issue on my G20. There are 2 batteries in the car and I only disconnected 1 when replacing shifter. I know for some this is too late but for others I used this service to fix my shifter. beats the price the dealer quoted me especially being out of warranty.

The 48v mild-hybrid battery? Or is there another 12v battery under the hood?

if you have a hybrid, there is usually a disconnect switch in trunk or near the battery. my g20 is not a hybrid. it has a lithium battery under hood and a standard agm in the trunk.

I looked this morning, if there is a lithium battery on my '24MY, it must be well hidden.

the OP car is a M240 but i chimed in with the same problem and a fix as the shifters are the same.

As far as battery config per car, if it is a hybrid, there will be a disconnect switch somewhere, otherwise there are 2 batteries to disconnect on g20 which is what I was talking about.

the m240 i am not sure how many batteries it has as I do not own one. was just commenting on the fix for the shifter. if it does have 2 batteries it would be behind the fire wall on passenger side in engine compartment.

the 2024 i believe will be a mild hybrid though.

OK, it makes sense that a 2nd battery might cause an issue if the electronics were disturbed while there was power applied but it sounds like the OPs car is like mine and it doesn't have a 2nd battery so likely the issue was as he described (ribbon cable) rather than an electrical short or interruption.

No mild hybrid on my '24MY M240i although there is a place for one in the engine compartment.

So Rdurty2 is correct that there is only 1 battery (in the trunk) on the M240i.

I don't plan on doing this mod but I might do some future electrical mods and it would be good to know what needs to be disconnected to avoid issues with the CANBUS. Not sure about BMW cars but on my BMW motorcycles, this is a big issue (CANBUS).
