I like technology and bigger screens, so I'm not opposed to this design at face value. What I do have a problem with is as follows:

Looks tacked on, but the real gripe is i8 and the lack of physical controls. The screen isn't too huge. For the cars with the tablet running down the console, what happens when you smack it with your stainless coffee mug?

Is that screen face plastic or glass? Hopefully the latter. I can only imagine the scratches that will come if it's plastic.

Eventually every car manufacturer will go with screen slapped on a dashboard cause it means they don't have to design a slot for the instrument cluster.
This saves them so much money on dash design and button placements and other physical control materials. I hope they do eventually try and make it look more domed instead of flat and stuck on! |

The only issue for me is the kick stand. There is just no way to see that as a nice design feature objectively. I'm hoping this is not going to be what we will see on the m2 but It will probably be. It's just as anyone else is thinking, not good design but an afterthought.

Yep. Cheap cheap cheap. Automotive design is in a slow steady decline.

I kinda get the idea behind the "kickstand", it's part of this organic language they're trying to slowly incorporate, eventually the lower part of thr dash will be more exposed, with more "kickstands", then the seats will appear to be floating on some kickstands with reverse kickstands for headrests, then there will be nothing left of the interior, not even display screens, and well have some book shelves for navigating maps, and reading entertainment.
Oh wait |

I miss physical, analog guages. My first BMW was a ‘96 318ti. In now way does it measure up to a modern BMW except for the gauges. I’d take those analog guages over any digital gauge package. But the world has moved on. I wish the curved display was better integrated into the dash. I’d be disappointed if the TV in my loft was as poorly mounted as the screen in the 2 series. Sigh.

I agree. When I ordered my 2022, M240i I did exactly that – I ordered dial gages instead of the digital dash with the bent bar graph speedometer and tachometer. And yes, the world has moved on, but that doesn’t mean it has moved on to a better place. The original King Kong is still the best and that was done with analog, stop-motion puppets not CGI. If you are going to give me a digital dash, I want the choice to be able to configure it so the tachometer is a large dial right in the center of the dash. No one likes the way the screen is mounted instead of being “incorporated”. Missing buttons is IMO another design/cost-cutting misstep by BMW. Sorry BMW and other “sport” sedan/coupe/sports car makers, when I get behind the wheel of one of your “sporty” cars, I don’t want to feel like I’m driving an I-pad. Oh well, maybe I’m just getting old. Bob |

Whatever happened to all that curved display screen technology that was being demonstrated everywhere 3-4 years ago? At the time, it was hailed as allowing designers to incorporate the display directly into/onto the facia itself - so it'd be integral. All this stuff looks like it's just miscellaneous, off-the-shelf curved displays glued randomly onto the fascia, and it's gong to look immediately dated if the integral display tech ever arrives.
One concept I saw was using it to wrap around the A-pillar connected to a camera on the outside, making it look to the driver like the pillar wasn't there, which I thought was clever. Of course, the logical extension is not to have any windows at all, and just replicate the outside view on the walls of the car itself, using curved displays. Which is an idea being touted for the next generation of passenger 'planes as well. thereby eliminating the issues around windows in a pressurised aircraft.

Also the resolution and size are barely different, the left screen is almost the same and the right one is only something like 2” larger than the id7 live cockpit pro. Much of that new space is taken up by the climate controls, which used to have their own screen and buttons. They just took the two screens they already had and smooshed them together. It’s not really that different. |

BTW, is there anyone on the planet that prefers the new nub versus the traditional gearshift lever? I'm guessing the answer is no and for the life of me I don't understand this trend. As someone who drives primarily in manual mode, I like to have the option of shifting with the paddles or the gearshift lever. Obviously Porsche has gone this way too and I just don't get it.

The screens are a lot bigger & brighter with higher resolution with new faster processors, the ID7 drivers display for me was dark & the infotainment screen was tiny compared . |
