Many feel like this because BMW decided to go in the direction of voice control and Intelligent Personal Assistant with learning AI features for the future and I guess we just need to adapt and learn to "cohabit" with these changes.

It's super easy after you spend like 3 minutes with it.
I'll have hit the wall in those 3 minutes

Taking buttons with electronics/cost and replacing them with piano black trim, and then tossing those functions into an existing screen.. WAY cheaper, and makes the production process quicker and more efficient.

I think the chip shortages and everything over the last few years has forced manufacturers to bake way more things into screens, to make themselves less reliant on supply chain issues and lower cost. Now, if these cars were becoming cheaper in cost to buy (or staying at the same price re: inflation), I'd be fine with this direction. But the fact that cars are becoming less user friendly, cheaper to produce for manufacturers, AND getting more expensive for customers... I guess that's where I have a problem.

My tinfoil hat says that manufacturers are privy to the fact consumers know used cars are overpriced and new cars are "better value" at the moment, and they're trying to sneak in lowered production costs and higher prices to the customer since people are more willing to buy New than they have been in a while.
Keyboards would cost more than LED monitors if this were the case.

No, I believe the product folks at BMW/Mercedes/Tesla truly believe that touchscreens provide an overall better user experience than physical buttons, and that they’ll sell more cars with them.

This flat screen was in mercedes first, then this one. I am sure the car drives better than previous but it is becoming numb, boring and just not special. BMW used to be special now it is as special as a shrimp cocktail

After driving the A class w177 for four years I can say I love the MBUX system & like I have said before for me the demo M240i we test drove felt like the ID7 system was a bit last gen even compared to a car 4 years old , I get that people get used to things like ID7 & the design isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but for me if I’m buying a modern car I would want the latest system , I also have had four Lotuses of the last 15 years including three Exiges so I know what totally analogue feels like but even Lotus are now going infotainment screens .
Personally I think since MBUX came out BMW & other manufacturers have lagged behind with there infotainment systems ,hard preset buttons to me look a bit 90s & I would never use them .
It’s horses for courses.

my dad has the MB system. It sucks. It's tacky and inefficient and very distracting while driving.

Modernity shouldn't be the priority—the priority is to be effective and usable. These are just flashy and "techy" but will date horribly (imagine these in 10 years lol) and it's basically for people who don't care about driving or watching the road and getting engaged in driving.

I think in the end it comes down to personal taste and preference and how often somebody needs to use buttons. It can be great for some and lousy for others

uh wat?

If you care about watching the road and getting engaged in driving why do you care about how you interact with the car's infotainment system?

You realize that millions of people believe that BMW stopped being special in the 90s, right?

Sounds like a you problem then.

Seriously, how often are people messing with the climate controls in the middle of driving?

Not crazy about the look, but this is not too big a deal for me. Provided the G87's driving dynamics are exciting, I won't change my mind because of the screen.

Given some time, I might find some advantages to this setup. That was the case with my Tesla after about a week.
The screen isn't really that much higher than the previous implementation.

If you go into China BMW and click M240i you'll see the new 2023 Model, to my knowledge this is the only website that's been updated to show the 2023 version. It showed new additions to the car, do you think this addition will extend to other markets? I've linked the page below, you can translate it into English.

my car shows with no black gloss spoiler in my BMW app ( the Canadian version) , so I am almost sure these are only Chinese market options, sadly ( I wished so bad to also have that spoiler from factory) ...

The great thing about not having an ornamental plastic/leather shroud is that the screen can be bigger without taking up any additional space.

skipped over the rear view, only change from 2022 appear to be idrive 8 and centre gear lever selector, zero external changes, for the UK 2023 model.
