2024 M240i getting 48V mild hybrid

Was checking out BMW’s website today and noticed mention of the 48v mild hybrid system on the m240i. MY 2022 and 2023 didn’t have this. I guess it’s official that MY 2024 will have its?

I found this article when I was considering 340s, presumably it'll be similar with some help to launch and stop/start. Not sure if it will impact actual numbers as there must be extra weight (?), it'll be interesting to see when they start getting delivered.

B58 with Mild Hybrid - Auto Stop/Start button goes away?

Interesting, I hadn’t spotted that. (I’m close to placing an order for an M240i.)

Doing some quick research, it seems a result of this change is the Auto Stop/Start button goes away.

Mentioned in this video, beginning at 1:45:

And also doing some Google image searches of 2023 M340i and M440i that already have the mild hybrid with the B58, the Auto Start/Stop button is indeed gone.

Same function seems to still apply … that Sport mode still disables it. But not being able to easily toggle it on/off in other modes will be a source of frustration.

The Auto Stop/Start would need to be 100% better with the mild hybrid (than it is with my current MY23 X1) for this to not be a huge step back.

Maybe someone who has experience with the B58 mild hybrid in other models can speak to the behavior, improved or not?

The issue with my X1’s behavior is it shuts off so quickly (1/10th of a second instead of a couple seconds) that just navigating out of a parking lot with natural brief pauses, that engine will turn off 5 times. That is not saving 1 drop of fuel (probably costing fuel with all the restarts) and obviously adding to engine wear and tear.

The static button (that the X1 doesn’t have with its different console, you have to disable it via the touchscreen) allows for the easy toggle to have it enabled at stop lights where it makes sense, but disabled for my parking lot example or when pulling out into traffic from a stop where the hesitation becomes a safety issue on top of the aggravation.

Someone at BMW gets an annual bonus if they can get the M240i heavier than the M2.

My window sticker doesn't show it but since it is very early in the '24MY they might be adding it as an option or mid-year addition.........Don't care for it myself but not enough to cancel my order if it should arrive with it on there.

M2 is a fun weekend warrior but not a great daily driver due to harsher suspension, lack of grip. The M240 (especially with xDrive) does it all in one. For the fun drives I have a 992 Cabrio.

Because XDrive, and I wanted ALL the options. I did the same. Mine was just over $60k. The only feature I didn't get was the wireless charger, because everyone said it's garbage, and I'd rather have the Digital Key anyways.

If the M2 Comp was going to have XDrive, I may have held out.

lmao i doubt that.... i was on a boat with some friends this weekend, and my friends wife comes up and says "i have a bone to pick with you!!". granted im 5 mango light beers in at this point. but she's like "Eric just had a second kid a month ago, and he told me you guys were driving 100mph??" and without hesitation i was like "i drive that fast so often that i don't even remember that happening, but just know if he wasn't in the car, i'd have been going 110"

the thing just goes but forgets to remind you how fast lol

i feel that. at a point where i only want 1 car and as someone with no kids, couldnt find a better car than the m240 (i live somewhere that's hilly as hell and gets winter). the m2 does seem to fill a totally different need than the m240 even if they do look quite similar

It is on every brand I've seen. They get hot, extremely hot. The phone shuts down and stops charging hot as well as being hot to the touch.

Is M2 Comp confirmed no xDrive?

Disadvantages of the M2 to me:

- Ugly boxy design
- Not AWD (live where it snows)
- Way worse mpg
- Rougher suspension (yikes for pothole city driving)
- Higher pricetag (for extra power that's not needed on the street)
- No Thundernight (or any great color imo)
- No red leather option

If you track 20x a year and can afford it, the M2 might be worth it though. Oh and you have to not vomit looking at it too of course haha.

From what I gathered from the 3/4 series forum and actually driving a few of them, the mild hybrid system improves start/stop performance and also eliminates the ability to disable start stop as we already know. The “performance” benefit is only enough to negate the extra weight of the hybrid components.

IMO, I’m very glad not to have it. It adds more weight and complication without any real benefits

Higher purchase cost, higher insurance cost, higher running cost, little or no usable extra performance in the real world on real roads.

I had an M4 and it was great but totally OTT on public roads. The M Performance range has more than enough performance for normal roads in a more practical and wallet friendly package.

Early on during interviews after the M2 was announced. I can't remember exactly who they were interviewing, but it was someone very high up with BMW, and they said there were no plans for the future M2 Comp to come with XDrive. It could still happen, but probably years down the road, and I wasn't going to wait that long, I needed a new car, and currently very happy with the M240i.

Wonder if this is true, the 2025 340 are supposed to get the new TU2 engines so maybe the 240 is getting the mild hybrid TU engine. i just ordered my 2024 yesterday. i guess we have to wait and see.
