Silly recall question
Hi,
So i've often wondered about recalls. Who pays for this? are they only free for the original owner or even once the car has had a few owners, can you still drive to BMW and get the work carried out for free? Cheers Andy |

Recalls are paid for by the Manufacturers.
It is irrespective of the number of owners, within / out of warranty or the age of the car. My son had a VW Lupo, all £50 worth (you can tell what a state it was in!) The car was almost scrap, not roadworthy, but "legal" until the MOT ran out. Had an outstanding recall on the brake pedal support. He works for a VW dealer, and they had an incentive going on, so he put it in for the recall. The support had to be specially made in Germany as they were well obsolete. About 3 hours work to replace it. Car was scrapped 2 months later! Costs must have been 10 times the value of the car! |

I still find it funny that the non mandatory recalls are called "Quality enhancement" by BMW

I called BMW and they say there is no outstanding recalls or quality enhancements but they didn't say what had been done. Going to call the dealer who supplied and serviced the car for the first 5 years and see what they can tell me.

Not sure if this is 100% the case, but recalls on my cars have always been listed in the Carfax history report. Or maybe it was the Autocheck report? I always use both and don't recall (get it, recall) which one lists them.

I know HPI do it for an extra £3 and I did pay for their £20 check.
To be honest if BMW tell me there are none oustanding, they aren't going to be interested in my internet found list of recalls, they have profits to maintain lol.

Its annoying we can't find out by just putting in our VIN numbers into their website. I'm sure dealerships don't want the hassle and just fob you off on second hand cars unless it was sold by them. They have to do the leagal obligatory ones but not the "quality enhancements"...

I think the problem with having some sort of site is that they would then make it easy for people, therefore resulting in a flood or at least increase in recall/QE work = money out of their pocket.

I got an email from these guys a few days ago. I can't even remember entering my details but it does give a list of recalls with which vin numbers are affected.
Anyone else every use this? I don't want to take it for gospel if it's incorrect! |
