Comfort Access

Just wondering whether there is any way of turning off comfort access on the car when it arrives?
I know the key has a motion sensor but not a fan of keyless entry so wanted to turn off the feature if I could.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I did search but couldn’t find an answer.

It can be set in the idrive at least with 2022 idrive 7

Approach or leaving to lock/unlock
Or disabled one or both

Can confirm with iDrive 8 you can customise it to prevent it from auto unlocking on approach.

But you still don't need to take it out your pocket to unlock, I don't think you can disable keyless entry, only the proximity unlock (which I have found to be a pita as I park close to my house and going to the garage or taking the bins out starts clicking the locks).

Why do you want to disable a convenience? Car theft concern?

I only use my iphone to open the car and start it. The phone does not have a proximity sensor so I have to put the phone very close to the door handle for it to unlock. I never use the BMW key.

I’ve had my car for a year and still don’t know exactly what happens and whether it’s because of my physical key, my card key, or my phone

Shouldn’t be too hard to work out which one you do or do not put next to the door handle when opening the car. Similarly which, if any, you put in the phone tray.

Agreed. You can turn off certain features but you can't disable keyless entry completely. Imo you should be able to and I've told BMW UK as much. Unfortunately BMW seems to think that advertising the presence of keyless entry through fitting different door handles and not being able to disable it if you don't want it is a good strategy.

Isn’t comfort access a cost option?
Don’t want it, don’t buy it

Alternatively, put your key in a Faraday pouch.

Also interested as to why you wouldn’t want it.

It’s part of a pack and the other items I want.

I prefer to to turn it off so as to limit relay theft . Other cars that I’ve had (non BMW) allow you to turn off the setting completely just find it strange that BMW don’t

Not quite sure exactly what your interpretation of relay theft is but turning off CA would still leave you open to a grab of the fob signal i.e. a “traditional” relay theft.

The chances of someone getting signal grab from CA or a fob press IMHO equally slim.

The bmw keys go to sleep if not moving so relay is mitigated to a fair degree.
I had a Merc that you could double tap the lock button on the fob and that disabled it and I liked that.
It took me a while to get comfortable with the BMW method but if you put the fob on the ground near the car, after a short while you won't be able to unlock the door so relay would only work if the fob wasn't asleep. I don't keep my keys in my pocket when in the house. They also use rolling keys so replay theft is unlikely too.

Samesies. I usually just throw my keys in the car before washing/detailing, but I like the convenience factor enough to just deal with this minor issue. Another annoying aspect is I need to make sure my phone is far enough away from my car so it doesn't connect, as I play music through Bluetooth in my garage.

I leave the key in the house and use my phone to access the car and drive back into the garage.

The mirrors folding in and out every time the water spray hit the door handles was annoying

I still don't get why people walk round the house with car keys in their pocket, 1st thing I do when I go through the door is hang them up, don't need bulky keys in my pocket when I'm dossing. As to when I'm washing the car, I either leave them in the car or in the garage, don't have a problem with locking/unlocking then either.

Some people just like to make things difficult.
