Don’t hold your breath. This seems totally antithetical toward streamlining the production process.

This is a "hurry up and wait" situation. If you want one then you better hurry up and get your order in. Then wait for the next year to get it! Nobody buying this car needs this car though. It's a luxury item. But damn do I want it badly!

I am not. Nevertheless, it is completely possible as SLP’s paint shop was built with the full intention of offering individual paint. It is far from a technical challenge as the paint shop is highly automated. SLP is currently BMW’s most advanced production facility.

Sure, it’s possible. But it’s also widely known that individual orders delay production. So this suggestion sorta seems counter intuitive to me.

That used to be the case, but no longer with the paint system used at SLP. A paint change can occur on the fly, per vehicle, and without the downtime of having to flush the system. It is cartridge based.

The i4 is built in Munich. The LCI 3 series for North America was moved from Munich to Mexico for EV expansion there.
Due to the Biden Admin Inflation Reduction Act there are various stipulations that EVs have to be built in NA with a large percentage of their components, including the batteries produced in NA as well. There is a high probability BMW EV production for North America will move to Mexico and confirmed for Plant Spartanburg. BMW is going to build a battery facility at/near BMW Plant Spartanburg as well.

So almost 9 months from the start of production? I know nothing about car manufacturing but that seems wild it would take almost 9 months from the start of production to deliver cars...

I’d speculate that’s not the only factor at play and that there is indeed still a built in delay with individual orders. Otherwise why not offer the option from the get go?

My last internal vehicle was an individual paint X series from Plant Spartanburg. It did not add any additional time. In fact it arrived earlier than expected. Production ramp-up would delay individual paint from occurring. Given that G87 production began on December 8th, come September ‘23 ramp up would no longer be an issue.

The fact is only the brass at AG, NA, and SLP know exactly what is going on south of the broader at Plant San Luis Potosi. To-date anything seen online pertaining to actual delivery dates is nothing more than speculation until U.S. allocations drop.

I'm, unfortunately, an MVP at this situation between my G80, Ford and, now recently, Porsche.

Good luck to you with your M2!

No, I’m not kidding. The Bimmerpost front page has accurately broken several leaks, mock-ups, and “rumors” like this one. A year ago, when practically everyone thought those very first images of the G87 bumpers sitting uninstalled in a dirty warehouse were of some random Chinese bodykit, it was clear to me that it was the real deal once the thread landed on the front page. Same thing with all of the G80/G82 leaks, from the earliest looks at the grilles/hood/rear diffuser to xDrive “rumors” to ZF8 over DCT, market launch timing, etc.

Pretty sure there will be an xDrive G87 at some point based on what’s landed on the front page in recent months.

Fully agreed. The fact that someone higher up at bimmerpost approved this basically guarantees it's true

I can assure you BMW does not make more money on EVs. Legacy automakers like Ford and GM are net negative on EV production. GM doesn't expect to turn a profit until 2025. A Ford Mach E cost $25k more to produce than a Ford Edge. I am almost sure BMW is in a similar position right now. They would rather pump SUVs out of SC plant as fast as they can, which they have been doing all year. Light truck sales saved BMW's year.

Well, looks like I'm not so silly for asking for an actual source of information other than 4 people in the UK who were told something by their client advisors. I'm a client advisor and I'll be the first to admit that we are not told much of anything.

That being said, production could still be delayed. My only point is that at this point no one knows anything and vetting sources is important.
