11.470s run on 98 RON

When the price of E85 rose by 20c/L, I decided to give 98 a go. So I purchased a custom 98 tune from Ken @ Wedge Performance and gave the car a run at the Willowbank Raceway Test N Tune last night. I did 3 runs - 11.53s @ 120mph, 11.644s @ 119mph and 11.470s @ 120mph. Engine ran smoothly with no fault codes, misfires or other issues.

Thanks Socks. Yes it is running very well on the BP Ultimate 98. Also, it is nice to be able to drive anywhere with good fuel economy (600 kms to a tank compared with around 400 with E85) and get fuel anywhere. When I compare the differences between the E85 and 98 in performance on the strip, there is a 0.7s improvement in time and a 10 mph improvement in speed with E85. But that is using drag radials. It was good to get down to 10.77s but to improve on that, I would need a built engine and larger exhaust to reduce back pressure. At my age, I can't see the benefit for that outlay. I could buy another 335i for that cost.

Totally agree Coupes, E85 is ok for a bit of fun but not practical as a daily driver fuel. You have heaps of power without sinking loads of money into chasing that last 5%. Is really a case of diminishing returns. Tbh most street driving is under 5000 rpm, pretty rare to use power at WOT on a commute to work lol. Really impressed with your numbers, clearly have got the launch and shifts sorted.... nice

Yes totally ripped off on E85 at the moment.
Motive flex fuel module is handy , at least can run a little bit of it as a mix. 98 is enough to put the hurt on.
Good point on the tyres, Ive converted to sticky Kumho V70a medium compound for daily work . Work in the rain, around corners and hook close to a DR . Car is fun to drive at all power levels.
I am more than happy to replace them more frequently as its getting to enjoy everything about the car every minute you drive it.

Agree on the cost of E85. Going back to 98 will save me a lot of money as I won't need a built motor. Hopefully, I may be able to shave another tenth off that time in the future.

Thanks Brule. It is a great car to drive on the street with twin turbos and still goes ok. However, nothing like your beast Brule. How do you find the powerglide for driving around the street? Duck reckoned his was quite good but I don't think it would compare to the 6 speed.

Looks like you're running very rich (goes down to 10.5-10.8 at redline).

Doesn't happen in 2nd gear at the same load x rpm (you get 11.5 afr), may actually be triggering the cat protection mode (which is normally disabled by most tunes these days).

The dme has the exhaust temps calculated by a mathematical model, and as you spend more time at WOT, you can build up the temp in the calculation and cause it to go into cat protect mode, which defaults to a low afr (a sliding scale which bottoms out around 10.4 AFR). Results in not much power at track days where its trying to save your non existent cats while you're spending a lot of time at WOT.

Since it didn't happen in 2nd gear and is more prevalent in higher gears towards the upper rpm range, looks like it might be happening in your tune.

The relevant table in the xdf that governs this is "EGT NOx Set Point (CAT Protection Mode)"

Thanks Vince for that information. I have noticed that the last couple of tune versions are using more fuel. Average Consumption has increased from 10.2L/10 to 11.1L/100 with no change in driving style or areas traveled. I am wondering if somehow the PI is leaking or being activated. It shouldn't as the earth wire is disconnected. I am going to remove the PI anyway now that I am staying with 98 RON. I can smell fuel around the car but cannot find any leaks. When I remove the PI, I will be able to see more around the HPFP and hose connections. Didn't have the issue when it was on E85.

6 Speed is more fun.
I had more fun at 400hp on the street also.

Easy to drive but its noisy in 1st gear and in park. Literally like a supercharger sound.
2nd gear is silent.

This is with RB hybrid turbos right? You do have a lot of timing pulls, maybe add some E to clear them up... Also you are not logging IAT?

The fuel trims in the log don't look like they're fighting against the PI, only around the +5-10% mark

Yes, I am running Super RB Evo turbos. Timing corrections have always been an issue with my engines even when using 100% E85. Ken @ Wedge Performance says it is the norm with these engines. I know others have posted datalogs with no timing corrections but I don't know what you do to get rid of them. On the iat, yes, I will have to include it back into the log. Ambient temperature on the above run was 13C.

Thanks Vince. I will see what Ken Atkinson comes back with. Below are the logs for the other 2 runs. In the first log, the AFRs appear good throughout the run and the rail pressure is steady the whole period. In the second run, the AFRs go rich towards the end of 3rd and 4th gears which coincides with a drop in rail pressure. This is similar with the 11.47s log. It appears that extra fuel is pouring in for some reason at the stage.

Have you noticed that the latest versions of MHD have a load limit per gear function, I've been thinking of playing with that since I can't really control the wheel spin in 1st or 2nd when the car comes on boost

I haven't changed to the latest version of MHD as yet Hoper. I have been reading in the forums that members are having different issues with the latest version which MHD are working on. Once these are sorted out, I will download the latest version.

I haven't changed to the latest version of MHD as yet Hoper. I have been reading in the forums that members are having didn't issues with the latest version which MHD are working on. Once these are sorted out, I will download the latest version.

I went out to Willowbank Raceway yesterday to the Test N Tune held from 10am to see if adding some octane booster would make any difference in the times. The ambient temperature was 12C higher than the last meet which was held at night in the middle of winter and the condition of the track wasn't as good. The times were similar to the previous meeting at around 11.5s @ 121 mph but the big difference was with the timing corrections. My engine has always had heaps of timing corrections with 100% E85 and 98 ULP which has stifled the full potential of the car. I have been trying to find out what was causing these corrections thinking it must be some sort of mechanical noise that is being picked up by the knock sensors. Running the octane booster has almost eliminated any timing corrections which has me puzzled now as to why the timing corrections are present using 100% E85. The product I used was Nulon Pro Strength Octane Booster.
