Oil changes: does everyone change their own, or take it to a shop?

I know most people don't wait until the the service indicator date for their oil change. Do most of you change your oil yourselves, or take it to a shop? I'm pretty lazy, so I'm wanting to do the latter. Any recommendations on shops even though it's just an oil change?

I've done both... I let BMW change it when the service light comes on (since I'm still under the 4 year free oil changes and wipers) but also change it on my own a couple times in between.

if you're still under the maintenance plan let BMW do every OTHER one (on the 15k schedule)

Yeah, this is what I was going for. I just wasn't sure if I wanted to do it myself or if there was a shop around the area that does it for a reasonable price.

once in a while, dealerships have specials, I get monthly ads from VOB, Tischer and Russell. So far I love Russell b/c they are close to my work and they usually have BMW rentals avaliable. Last month, they had a summer oil change deal for $70 bucks. It cost about $55 bucks for parts anyways, so labor was about 15 and they gave me a 2011 1 series for the day to have fun with, and a car wash. Made my day.

Exactly what I did. After receiving my oil change kit, I got my oil changed at a friends house in 20-25 mins. I'd def prefer to do this again, because you can change it when you want (that 14,000 mile stuff is BS from bmw. I'd change the oil every 7k miles or so)

AND

you dont have to worry about having to make an extra trip to the dealership/ them sniffing for mods if you do it yourself

I have been taking mine to Fairfax BMW. If you go to there website under Service Specials, you can get your oil changed with new filter and BMW Synthetic Oil for under $100. Takes about an hour. Well worth it if you ask me. I use to change the oil myself but i'm getting lazy as I get older.
I get my oil changed every 5k miles.

Also if you are a BMWCCA member you save 10% - 15% off parts. I think I paid around $80 last time I was there.

5k intervals are not necessary on these cars. They have condition-based service for a reason. I feel perfectly fine under BMW Ultimate Service and following CBS. Why pay extra if you're under warranty? I'm not paying for anything for 6 year/100k; best part of BMW ownership.

Do you mean maintenance? Warranty and CPO don't cover maintenance items. Besides, it's cheap insurance for those of us who plan on keeping the car for a while.

I do my oil change every 7-8k miles or once a year... whichever comes first. I have ramps but not the special filter cap tool. If you plan on doing it yourself, get the tool.

I guess you 07 folks are out of luck, but I don't plan on paying for an oil change for 6 years/100k (I got extended maintenance thrown in).

yeah, but 15k intervals is not wise. 7-8K is perfect....

If you drive 15,000 miles a year and you follow BMWs oil change interval, that comes out to be $60-$70/year. Chump change IMO.

Why? Who says? Are you an automotive/mechanical engineer for BMW? Do you have proprietary, statistical information to prove a 15k mile interval is bad?
