E90 330d DPF Concerns
Hi folks,
I've just bought a 330d, and as with any new car have been going over it to figure out what repairs are needing done etc. The car is not properly warming up, so the usual thermostat issue is needing sorted, its also got 5 failed glowplugs, so i need to replace those too. Given the faulty thermostats, and fault codes, i'm aware that this often affects the regeneration of the DPF so i tried to do some diagnostics to figure out what the DPF was like. After much reading online, i used "Tool32" to run a job called "abgleich_csf_lesen" which is supposed to output the various specifics of the DPF system, however the output i get doesnt make any sense: Code:
apiJob("D62M57B0","abgleich_csf_lesen","","") Satz : 0 OBJECT = d62m57b0 SAETZE = 1 JOBNAME = abgleich_csf_lesen VARIANTE = D62M57B0 JOBSTATUS = UBATTCURRENT = 1 UBATTHISTORY = 1 IGNITIONCURRENT = 1 IGNITIONHISTORY = 1 Satz : 1 JOB_STATUS = ERROR_ECU_SUBFUNCTION_NOT_SUPPORTED__INVALID_FORMAT MSOT_EINH = g TIOP_EINH = s LSUM_EINH = m QFL_EINH = l TILCK_EINH = s QFLTOT_EINH = l BEGMOM_WERT = 1.000000E+004 BEGMOM_EINH = Nm ASME_WERT = 8.050000E+002 ASME_EINH = g ASKM_WERT = 2.253910E+005 ASKM_EINH = km OELREG_EINH = s _TEL_AUFTRAG = 6 Bytes 000 : 83 12 F1 22 01 0A ƒ.ñ".. _TEL_ANTWORT = 7 Bytes 000 : 83 F1 12 7F 22 12 39 ƒñ.".9 This job is supposed to output information about when the car last regenerated, but its all missing, and its reporting that "ECU SUBFUNCTION NOT SUPPORTED" message which looks rather ominous. I've started to wonder if the previous owner has had a DPF error on the car, flashed on "DPF Delete" software to get rid of the errors so he can flog the car, but hasnt actually removed the DPF... The car drives fine, but ofcourse its new to me and i've not driven any other 330d so i'm not sure if its right. If anything i'd say its a little laggy, but maybe thats just how they are? Any ideas? |

Suggest you use the smartphone app BMWhat which will give you clear readings on things like distance since last regeneration, amount of soot in the particle filter, etc. If those values don't look right or are not available on the app, then I'd start to be a little worried.

Hi mate
I'm not familiar with the job you ran there so can't help with the output file you've posted. Do you have access to any other tools? I assume you have a DCAN cable connecting to the ODB port? I tend to do my diagnostics using DIS/GT1 - this has a number of diagnostic functions and gives a readout of the last DPF Regen, 2nd to last DPF regen and third to last. You can also request a regeneration and measure the exhaust back-pressure. Its a good indication of the state of your DPF. There have been a number of DPF related threads here recently - have you checked them? Personally I'm an advocate of a quality DPF cleaner such as Forte added to 3/4 of a tank of fuel then a decent motorway run if possible to get things up and going. If you say your engine is running cold (did you access the hidden menu?) then deffo thermostats. Did mine not long ago - EGR 5 minute job, main is easy too if you take your time and remove the fan first. Definitely buy BMW replacements, lots of evidence of aftermarket ones failing quickly. For software I used: http://www.bcables.com/ which I found reasonably priced. Best part is the software works well with no messing about with the setup. Additionally, I found mine benefits from: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010788837...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Whilst fuel stations are using winter diesel. Have you taken a look at my refresh thread here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1105836 Might give you some direction for refreshing yours? Hope that helps - happy to answer questions (I'm no expert but I have read about these extensively now) |

Interesting! Must admit I haven't paid for it - but lots of the info seemed greyed out as if it wasn't available. Do you mind me asking what month and year your car is?

I dont mind at all. It's a 2009, I think from memory it was February. I'm not technically minded enough to use the full software on a laptop so for me the ease of use and idiot proof nature of BMWhat is a godsend, worth every penny.

Thanks mate. I need to check - I think there were ECU changes between my year (Nov 2007) and 2009 - I'm sure I read that your ECU gives BMWhat more info than mine. Have you paid for the app?

I think you are correct. The earlier cars need a cable I think whereas on mine I can use the Bluetooth adapter. I have paid for the full version of the app.

After March 2007 you can use the bluetooth adapter, this works fine on mine. Just looking at my lite version - where do you check DPF parameters?

Cheers for the help.
I borrowed my brothers diagnostic lead, though i've now ordered my own, incidentally the same "BMcables" one linked to above. Once mine arrives i guess i can get the DIS program setup and give that a try. I saw the BMWhat app, but seems a little expensive when you can do everything with the OBD lead, plus being an older car, i'd need to buy their specific USB cable to use the coding functions etc as well, and then after buying it they expect to charge more for certain features. Takes the p a little. From what i've read, there should be output values such as: LSUM_WERT which is "distance traveled since last successful regeneration" in the output from Tool32, which are missing on my car. I tried the free version of BMWhat, and the "Catalysed Soot Filter" button was greyed out. Is that what your supposed to use or is the info stored elsewhere? Or maybe it was greyed out becuase it was the free version? |

Yeah don't really want to bite the bullet and pay if it doesn't offer these features. It's a really handy and quick to use app though - good to keep an eye on stuff like temps and dpf.

The DFP data (at least the values which I monitor) are in the full list of Parameters which you can monitor. I'm not in my car right now so I can't check exactly how to get to it or what they are called, but from memory, you select the "Parameter" menu from the home screen when you are connected. You then get a really long list of different values which you can view, I believe you can select up to six to show up at any one time. In that list, you have the DPF values which are of interest - the main ones I look at (can't remember exact wording) are: > Distance travelled since last regeneration (this is shown in meters) > Amount of soot in the particle filter (this is shown in grammes) There are also some backpressure and DPF temperature related values which you can monitor. Again, just find them in the list, select them and start monitoring. Hope that helps.

Although it actually doesnt seem to matter what engine i select it always says this. I think I must have to buy the app to remove this message perhaps? |

I think all I was able to do with the unregistered version was connect it up and run a diagnosis, the idea being that you use the Lite version to check it all works, so you know you're okay to buy the full version. I can't honestly remember if I as able to check the parameters, sorry. I'm sure DIS will give you this information if you know how to use it (I don't!). Good luck!

evening all
had a interesting email conversation with Parvis and Avid (developers of BMWhat) today, and asked them the specific question regarding DPF regen request they have told me that in the next release (due very soon) will be the ability for the user to request a regen, via the app! for me (and I suspect the majority of diesel owners) this will be the single biggest win of the app - no more f'ing DPF going into regen mode as you pull off the motorway onto a congested urban route. you'll be able to request a regen when it suits you, not when the ECU decides. Happy Days! Garry |

Given the car regens every few hundred miles, i'm not so sure its as useful as you think?
Unless you literally drive around with the thing plugged in all the time ready to whip your phone out and hit the regen button once your on a motorway... And ofcourse the ECU will still regen when it wants to even if it doesnt suit you, so it might well still decide to start regenerating just as you pull off the motorway as you describe! |
