Have no idea what other people’s thoughts are, but I really dislike using rev matching. Are there evenly split camps on this one? I find myself turning it off in any mode or type of driving I’m doing. Am I missing something behind the idea of rev matching? Is it more functional for certain things? Better for the clutch or other components?

This is the first MT car I've owned with auto-rev match. Took some getting used to, but I rather like it now.

I would most likely leave it on for pure convenience.

I have the muscle-memory ingrained to rev match every downshift, but I will never be as consistent as a well-implemented auto rev-match function.

Funny enough, I loved it when clutchless upshift and auto-blipping technology came to motorcycles. Seeing a modern bike without it makes me scratch my head because I've grown accustomed to that convenience.

Blipping myself has never been a problem EXCEPT when braking. I can't heel toe to save my life - I end up just slamming on the brakes if I try.

The auto blip is amazing.

My 911 has rev matching and at first I hated the idea of it. But in some way, like PDK, it is perfect...every time. I also am able to shift faster with it, kind of making up the difference in shift speed compared to PDK. I use it every time now and love it.

I've been heel and toeing since the '80s and always thought is was a fun part of the MT experience. Was an auto-rev match sceptic, but I've found I love it, especially when in a mode with more exhaust volume. It blips pretty aggressively.

Rev matching, either by you or letting the engine control do it, reduces wear/tear on the clutch and transmission. Also, there is less chance up upsetting the car if rev matching is done.

Whether you rev match or let the car's electronics do it that's up to you.

I like the feature. Since I have two dissimilar cars: A M2 and a MINI JCW; both with nice transmissions but with differences none the less; and don't drive either nearly as much as I used to drive, I like rev matching.

Yeah, I can still rev match. Not the heal/toe thing but a variant of that which accomplishes the same thing but I leave rev matching enabled for the M2 and when out for a spirited drive in the JCW enable sport mode and let it rev match for me.

Are you talking purely about the auto rev match or lumping in manually rev matching by blipping the throttle on downshifts too?

It took some time to adjust to the auto rev match but I like it.

I’ve always manually rev matched every car I’ve owned. Especially performance cars, better for the drivetrain, smoother, and like others said, can avoid upsetting the car during aggressive driving. It’s a basic skill for these types of cars

I think I follow what you’re saying, and it was more on the downshifting that I had an “oh, no” moment, but i think I just enjoy the pure manual driving experience generally. It’s so satisfying to hit the shifts right on a cycle through 3rd. Do you lose any of that with rev matching on?

Full transparency, I’ve got 85 miles on my car and only 15 or so were with rev matching on, which is why I started this thread. I’ll give it another try next time out and try to form a more solid opinion.

The feature works great on the G87. Sometimes I have it on, sometimes off.

I know how to heel-toe but it takes more headspace and focus. If I'm in dense traffic (like city streets with jaywalkers) I turn on auto rev matching so it's one less distraction.

When I'm driving for fun, I'll heel-toe it myself to stay in practice.

I use it 100% of the time and find that I shift a LOT more than I otherwise would without it. Because it's fun. And I'm a hero on every downshift! Makes driving the car so much easier and to me, more enjoyable, especially since I can focus solely on getting the upshifts just right 100% of the time. As you have likely seen in other threads on this forum, BMW upshifts, especially 1st-2nd, takes more concentration than in more other manual cars.

I have a '19 VW Golf R manual and that car does not have auto rev match, and I wish it did. Not because I need it to drive it like a hero, but it would be great to turn on when needed.

What most said here, I love the auto rev-match.

But the most important part about it is that there are no downsides to having it on. Only upsides.

If you want to rev-match or can't control your reflexes and you end up rev-matching yourself, you can do it yourself. The car doesn't "get in the way", you can step on the gas and do it yourself when the feature is on too. Win-win.

I normally manually do it, but it is the best rev-match tuning I have tried on a few cars, it just takes the throttle pedal input if you do it yourself and doesn't "enhance" it. The F22 rev-match was a lot more intrusive, overriding throttle pedal input and could only be switched off in DSC-Off mode.

Drove my Miata today for the first time since getting the M2 (about a week) and completely forgot I needed to rev match myself lol

I kept downshifting and waiting for the revs to magically bump up before my brain woke up and remembered what I was driving.

For the new generation of kids learning to drive manual, its cool.

Ive been doing it since the mid 80s, so I dont find it necessary.
But just got our sons M2 few days ago and teaching him the manual
transmission and it seems to help. He can decide later if he needs to
keep using it or not.
