Delayed shifts under load? (automatic)

I've searched here and through Google, didn't really find anyone else reporting a similar issue.

Under normal driving conditions, I find upshifts to happen pretty quickly.

But with WOT, it seems there is a longer delay, somehow? The shift lights activate, I shift just before I run out of RPMs ...and it feels like it takes almost a second for the shift to happen. The whole thing feels like I would need to shift a lot sooner than necessary.

Have others experienced something similar?

You are probably just too late, click earlier,
If you click before redline they are razor quick, if you bounce limiter or are too high there is delay.

I found the same in an M3 wagon I test drove yesterday. In D, at WOT, it would hesitate (and pop/burble) when shifting. A little annoying when trying to get up to autobahn cruising speeds

First is really short, if you wait to see the red indicators, you're too late and will hit the limiter and it'll take a bit to shift. I've done it a few times. Otherwise I haven't noticed laggy shifts.

If the delay isn't present when leaving the car in auto mode and letting it shift itself then you are likely just too late on the shifts.

Welcome to slush box automatics. This is why DCTs are superior.

Thanks for the replies, will pay extra attention and try in auto, which will probably work just fine :-)

Yeah, so it sounds like there's a big penalty for shifting slightly too late. I suppose you can work around it, but it's still kind of weird.

It's not clear to me why the car doesn't shift immediately even if you hit the rev limiter.

its a torque converter auto and not a dct. i was watching another review the other day and the guy had the same problem, he had to shift a bit before redline to time it right. if you shift too close to redline it will hit the limiter due to the delay in the trans.

I’m coming from a DCT. Am I going to be disappointed? I am looking forward to the extra gear though. Should save fuel on the freeway.

I mean, probably? Especially if you are coming from PDK especially.

Modern torque convertors are better than ever, but will never have the uninterrupted torque of DCTs.

Actually the DCT is in a 335is, not Porsche. Still seems pretty quick to me, but I’ve never driven the Porsche PDK.

The DCT in the 335is is excellent. I had one too. You’re going to be disappointed by the automatic in the M2, sadly.

Yes, you will be disappointed on the sport side, but you will gain in comfort and fuel economy.
It's not a lose-lose, but you have to be aware of what you're getting.

Not a DCT is your answer to why auto has shift lags.

Only if you're coming from a 992 or 991.2 PDK equipped 911..

DCT might be the best part of that car. Oh well, the rest of the car is going to be so much better with over a decade better tech all the way around. The engine alone will be the Cherry. I’m sure (hopefully) less fraught with potential time bombs as the n54 was. .

Not any disappointment at all. Save the depressing news that is fully personal. Not all enthusiasts are the same. So far the SportAuto is superb as was the DCT in my 17 M2.

Nah. The 8ZF is factually worse than the M DCT.

I had no shifting issues whatsoever in my M4CX with the auto trans.

I loved that transmission. Shifted very quickly. Was excellent on the track.

Same trans in the M2, right? Hope so, because my M2 is coming with the auto.

Yeah, so coming back to this. I find the transmission to perform very well. The issue only arose when hitting redline, so that's avoidable.

My only "gripe" might be that slow speed downshifts into first could use better rev-matching.

When you are pushing the car that redline lag is a huge irritation, of which did not exist with M-DCT. Many chose manual because at least 6MT lets you dictate when the shifts happen, and you can still shift very fast depending on your skill level.
