Little Bit of Confusion About the Key Card ... And Also Adding Your Phone As A Key

So, the key card was very easy to set up. Just have both key fobs in the car, and place the card in the smartphone tray.

Easy enough. I took both key fobs in the house to see if the key card would work independently, which it did.

But ultimately, what is the intended purpose of the key card? Is it so you can leave your fob in the car and keep the card in your wallet? Or is it to serve as a backup in case you misplace your fob?

Do most of you keep the key card in your wallet, or keep it in the car?

And as far as programming my phone - I need to buy a better phone apparently. My current Samsung isn't compatible.

For me, the card is an emergency key to keep in my wallet in case I lose my FOB while out. Probably not a great idea to leave it in the car.

I haven’t set up my phone yet.

That's pretty much what I figured. Something to leave in your wallet as an emergency backup.

The key card was provided because originally only iOS phones were compatible with the digital key.

BTW, who carries a wallet these days

Makes sense. And kind of surprised that only Samsung S22 , 23 etc type Androids are compatible.

I guess just one more excuse for me to upgrade my current Samsung phone

If key is left in the car, someone could just smash their way in and drive off.

I understand that. What I was saying is that if the owner accidentally leaves the key fob in the car he could easily open the car using the BMW app.

And how do you accidentally lock your key in the car?

So I'm assuming two things about the car based on some of your replies :

1) The car doesn't let you lock the keys in the car (keys still in the car, press lock, shut door)...?

2) The phone app allows you to unlock / lock / start the car...?

I have an iphone. I only use my phone as the key. I almost never have the fob with me.

Oh nice. Do you keep the key card in your wallet in case you ever misplace your phone while you're out ?

That was the reasoning they gave me when I picked up my car at the performance center. I've used it for the gym a few times.
