After reading some of these comments, you'd think the car comes with a Dominoes Pizza roof rack.

If the build system has a code (usually 3 digits between letter and number) for a steel roof. The dealer can input it is the system.

They are making M2 with plain steel roof. I know they confirmed no individual colors at launch and the rumored explanation is that the Mexico plant doesn't have the infrastructure to do it yet. However, roof selection is feasible and only set by specific market.

The likelihood that the United States will receive three roof options is relatively small.

Truthfully we are fortunate that we are getting two seat choices with three color-ways on the standard M Sport Seat.

Edit, Keep in mind that I would like the steel roof as well, but I honestly do not foresee it happening.

Can you do a sunroof delete?

Hopefully this will be possible. Just need to run some VINs of EU cars with slicktop to get the code.

Canadian dealers might be able to help. Car comes with steel top as standard. I wonder if the build menu would show a specific code where the carbon roof or moonroof code goes.

The M2 is already a porker to begin with, so I would venture to guess that type of increase would have negligible impact on lap times.

Of course, I get that M cars are typically seen with CF roofs, and the concerns about helmet space.
Huh. Really not that much, plus that's the delta between a sunroof and the standard CF roof on the M3.

The delta between a sunroof and a steel roof would be smaller, probably more like 35-40 lbs.

Does the G-gen 2-series have noticeably less headroom than the F-gen? Even with a sunroof there's a TON of headroom. Granted i'm pretty short, but i think for all but the tallest drivers, fitting with a helmet and a sunroof wouldn't be that big of a problem. Again though, that's assuming the new car has similar head room to the old car.

The passion against sunroofs! I had no idea it is so strong. I can respect that. Just got my M3 with the no-cost sunroof instead of the standard cf roof. Gasp! Why couldn't the M2 have a similar $0 option like the M3 for you guys? Ponder that.

I like opening the roof more than I I like the cf roof look. (And I spent $4k on the exterior carbon package! )

As for performance, I wonder what % of track drivers could tell the difference between sunroof and cf roof in a "blind" study. I bet that would be looow.

It should be an option. I love my moonroof on my E90 335i. I use it so much. However, even with the seat as low as possible, it wouldn't leave enough room for a helmet. I will opt for the carbon roof to have a bit more clearance and miss using the moonroof instead of the climate controls. I also look like the look of it. Honestly, I would get crank windows if I could and go very minimalist but alas.

You guys don't hold your breath on this one; the existence of a carbon fiber slicktop at a steep up-charge, over the standard sunroof alternative guarantees that the plain steel roof will never be a selectable option in the US.

I reluctantly have to agree. We, the U.S. market cannot expect to have it all.

Not sure if this has been addressed but is it possible to option carbon buckets with the sunroof or do you have to go full boy racer and get carbon everything? I’d really want the seats but also really want a sunroof.

AFAIK, the current M3 M4 do not come with a metal slick top, it's either CF or Sunroof. Since the G87 comes with a metal slick top in some regions it would be possible for BMW to allow it in the US. Whether their marketing tactics will allow it is another matter.

Most will be tracking their cars. Sun/Moonroofs just add additional weight. Essentially BMW is forcing buyers to purchase the CF roof option...
While the weight gain isn't great the impact on headroom with a helmet is worse.

That said no M car should be without a carbon roof standard.

I know this is the breathing ground for sunroof haters but a little FYI since most of y'all are going to be stuck with one anyways. Supposedly, the new generation comes with some cool new functions that wasn't available in the previous model.

Basically, now if you leave your sunroof open with the engine shut off and it begins to rain, the glass closes for itself to prevent the inside from getting soaked or if the roof is left open for over six house, it retracts and locks automatically.

Also, if your vehicles is stuck with the sunroof option, you can't opt for the M Drivers Package, since vehicles with the glass roof is not tested for speeds over 155mph..

In addition, if you are traveling with the roof open and you cross over 140mph, the glass closes for itself and locks out its controls until the speed is decreased. So, no triple-digits speed test in "Mexico" with the roof open.

.

For the nonbelievers, the sunroof will be standard. No steel roof available.
