Engine Hot

Hi guys,

I just took my first trip to the local dragway yesterday and made some runs with my 335xi. Best run was a 12.735 @ 110.32mph! I was pretty impressed with my times, but I could only make two runs at a time before I had to let my engine cool down because it got ridiculously hot, and the temperature outside was even a little chilly.

So I've decided that my next upgrade is going to have to be an oil cooler; I'm looking to find out what people have been doing to install an OEM one. I'm finding a lot of upgrade kits but not the complete package.

Bear in mind that I do not want to spend $2000. I'm looking for a cost-effective solution to keep my engine a little cooler.

Thanks for help in advance.

Do you already have an upgraded FMIC?

Out of interest what oil temps did you get up to?

Sorry I cant recommend any coolers, never looked into them.

It is in the plans but I do not have an upgraded FMIC. I figured that would be cooling intake air temps and not oil temps.

It was at 250 maybe slightly higher. The very first run it got so hot that my dash lit up and and lost my power steering momentarily. Didn't have that issue again for the rest of my runs but like I said I had to let the engine cool first.

If you are exceeding 250F it's time for an oil cooler upgrade.

Evolution Racewerks Sport Oil cooler is the most popular option.

FMIC would cool intake air temps, it wouldn't help as much for the oil but an upgraded FMIC is something to still consider as the stock fmic is poor even for a stock vehicle.

You need a FMIC and an oil cooler.

Thanks for all the input. My question really is: where's the cheapest place to get the housing to retrofit? And what all needs to be done to install or will it just bold right on?

Whether you get the retrofit from the dealer or with the ER kit it's more or less the same price.

The ER sport oil cooler kit we offer comes with the option to add the retrofit kit.

I hadn't seen that before. So I'm looking at about $1100 or so for the whole thing all said and done?

I won't be able to order it for a little while but I will probably be in contact with you in a month or so.

No worries. The rules are only available to vendors. I just point it out to the public so you guys know that I'm not trying to avoid the topic on purpose.
