Bumper

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Something has been bugging me and it's not so much the rear bumper, that's a whole other discussion. After the reveal there was something that didn't look right on the front to me, but I couldn't put my finger on it. After a lot of staring I found one trait that is different on the G87 when compared to the G42 and F87. The bottom half of the bumper doesn't cut in giving it a really nice shape. It's literally in the shape of a box. I don't get this as it makes the front end look weird. I'll PS it out later but check out the comparison here in the meantime.

They were just sticking to the boxy them in all aspects of the design. To me it feels like once they started down the path they had to apply to to everything for the design to work in their minds. I personally would prefer straight lines mixed with some curves.

What's funny is that I prefer the more squared-off look at the bottom. The bottom of the F87 front bumper was a novel design element as the F80/2 and E90/2 prior all had square leading edges of the bumper. I wasn't a fan of the M-perf winglets on the OG M2 but they made a great front lip for the comp. However, a lot of aftermarket lips looked wonky at the edges because of said curvature.

While I get what they were trying to do with the square intakes, I do miss the /____\ central lower intake that was a relatively newer M design element staple (starting with the E gen cars) until now.

FWIW I think it's an odd design as well. I don't care for how it protrudes from the rest of the car. The back end of some recent BMW's look like they are pooping. The front of the M2 has this odd protruding thing going on as well.

If you or anyone is decent at Photoshop, I'm curious what it'd look like (picture #3) with the lower part of the opening colored read like the rest of the car. Just above that green line you drew. Making it look like the others above it. Maybe connecting would do something visually. It'd be an easy mod, not that I'd expect anyone to actually do it.

Square

This is the current theme. I like it more and more everyday.

Made a few changes that IMO made a big difference in a good way. Cut in the bottom of each corner and gave it dual headlight projectors.

Note: 5s between each frame

They squared it off like E30 and E36.

The dual headlight version is what this car should've come with. Maybe they make big changes and go this route for LCI. Headlight design is changing quickly for bmw so it's possible they do more drastic changes as this will be the last ICE car and will need to be relevant until almost 2030

I'm not so optimistic since it'll have to share the headlights with the 2 series and it's a lower volume seller than the 3 series. I wouldn't be surprised if they never changed the headlights or if they did, they would remain single projectors. It really ticks me off, even the 2 Series Gran Coupe gets dual projectors. SMH, hope I'm wrong and you're right!

For lack of better words, G87 design is just not cohesive. I am starting to think they might have had an earlier concept that was closer to G80/82 design. They made a change, but only to the bumpers. The bumpers look like a completely different person designed them in a separate room. Body lines just don't flow very well(almost ill-fitting), the headlights look like a quick afterthought. Bumpers look aftermarket almost.

Judging by the G90 M5 renders on homepage, they are going back to a more traditional styling while still modernizing. That design(yes I know it is a render) looks a lot more cohesive.

The DRL's would likely be coming down from the top as is BMW's new design language it seems. But, looks great. Wish those were real.

Cohesiveness

I disagree completely. The squareness of the back and front bumpers match the massive haunches of the front and rear quarters.
If you don't like I get it but the rationalizations are wrong.

Easy now. Different people have different opinions and are allowed to share them.

It just makes me think...

The boxy design. Even the grill has the notch on the bottom corners.

I guess it's part of what makes it look so mean and aggressive.

Design, just like art or music, is subjective.

It's totally allright if you don't like a particular car.

But that's YOUR view. That doesn't mean that other are "wrong."

There's way too much of this on this forum these days.

Thanks for saying that. Strong negative opinion and arrogance of knowing all is a pandemic in it self. Once again, key board warrior syndrome.
