Somebody posted the following list a while ago; it came from the VW TDI forum I think. Not all of the brands listed are found everywhere. Cannot attest to the accuracy of this list. BP (Amoco branded), 51; Chevron, 49; or 51 with Techron D labels in select markets ConocoPhillips through the 76 stations (California) 47-53 PetroCanada, 47-51 BP (Powerblend 47, otherwise 40-42) Shell, 46; Sinclair, 46; Sunoco Gold, 45 (often +1-5) Sunoco regular is usually 40. Exxon/Mobile, 43-46 Holiday Stations, 40-43 HESS, 40-42, can be up to 45. Husky, 40 + diesel Max additives raise another 1-3 from there (41-45 max) Love's: 40 Pilot: 40 Valero: 40 Sheetz: 40 Flying J, 40 Some guys use one or both of the following criterion: 1. Station does a lot of diesel fuel business 2. Brand name Frankly not sure whether it really matters. I usually follow both of the above criteria.

melonbread,
I generally have always run Chevron with according to list above gets you 49 CN. Separate from this, another forum member from "other site" told me that Texas urban areas get better stuff and he quoted 48 CN also. All of the chevrons around me (Houston) say "up to 5% biodiesel". So, we really don't know if its all petro diesel of 95%. It could vary batch to batch as well. For the others, I was referring to Snipe656. Anyone know what happened to him other than he sold his 335D and got a MB diesel? |

Only the best is good enough. Google the price for one injector and you know what I mean

What may be more important than brand is how fresh/clean is the fuel. There are not a lot of additives to diesel (like gasoline) and most diesel in an area will come from the same 1-2 refineries. I look for major brands but at a station with high volume.
For example I much more prefer the private name diesel supplier with lots of truck volume and new above ground tanks over the name brand station with a single diesel pump in the corner usually blocked by parked cars or snow in the winter. |
