After having my M2 in the shop for a week replacing an auxiliary radiator I decided to pre-emptively protect against future rock incidents. Step one is the Mishimoto skid plate that fits the M2/M3/M4 G8X series. I had my shop tech install it today and boy is it nice.

Installation was a breeze. I was quoted a half hour for labor. Everything matched up perfectly. The quality is great. The plate is nice and thick but not heavy at all.

Other threads have talked about skid plates not utilizing the OEM air damn in front of the oil cooler. This gasket is removed to install the Mishimoto skid plate but it is replicated to get the OEM air flow. You can see it in my pictures below.

Clearance is about the same as the OEM plastic skid plate that is removed. It might be a little bit lower but it's hard to tell.

I think it will be nearly impossible now for a rock to cause damage to the oil cooler. This is a no-brainer for $500. I wish BMW had done this themselves considering people are paying $70-80k for these, but what can you do?

This mod is worth every penny. That looks really nice and I like the fact that the Mishimoto skid plate reuses factory mount point and doesn't require cutting anything.

BMW has been putting oil coolers underneath M cars for years now. Agree, it's nuts that it's not protect better from factory.

Is the oil drain bolt now behind the plate?

No, that's much further back. This doesn't block anything. It actually replaced a plastic kid plate with a big hole cut in it for the oil cooler.

Thanks for sharing this. Do you have a pic with the stock plate on the car? Or just a pic of it on the ground? I don't have my car yet so I don't know what it looks like.

I do not have a picture of the stock plate but it should not be hard to find online.

This is the photo on Mishimoto website. Though might be a G82. Says it works across G8x, so guessing stock setup is also similar.

Looks like a quality piece and I hate that I may have to buy it.

We just got a few of these back in stock today, Mishimoto has been backordered lately.

Oh wow. I didn't realize it was just fully exposed like that. This is going to be the first thing I do when my car arrives.

My tech said he would charge half an hour of labor since the car was already lifted for another job. I would expect up to an hour of labor, but it is simple and straight forward. I just don't have much time to do stuff like this myself.

Got it but how much would a typical tech labor cost be? I have no background on this area.

Maybe I am way off here... but seems like it is a direct replacement for the factory plastic under tray.

If you have a jack and stands probably pretty easy and quick to DIY. If you don't it should be even easier for a shop, especially if your car is going on a lift.

My dealer's stock rate is $299/hour, I believe. Depends on your locale.

Mishimoto skid plate

Seems everyone has them for $449.95 right now. Mishimoto offers free economy shipping: https://www.mishimoto.com/bmw-g80-m3...late-2021.html

Labor costs are different at every shop. I cannot answer this question.

You are not off at all. It's about 20 bolts and they are probably all 10 mm. you can do it with a simple ratchet.

I had my shop do it because I get employee labor rates and I knew it would be easy during the break-in service.

Paying a shop would also be justified for someone who does not own a jack or the most basic wrench set, or someone who simply does not have the time to tinker on a car. 95% of people should simply do this install themselves.
