But like you pointed out, they would probably be happier to trade in your MY23/MY24 for the MY25 if it were that important.
It is that involved, I know firsthand because of done work for a large dealership to get one of their terminals back online that was down for a day which had already created a backlog of cars. Some things can be done OTA, but when it comes to flashing ECU/modules they need to be performed in a controlled environment, to prevent any corruption and be able to recover if something fails.

While it would be very easy to offer it over-the-air, I suspect it's a business strategy. You need to sell cars, the new cars need to be compelling.

Removing the compelling changes by allowing older cars to have them, reduce sales of new cars.

We all know some changes are incremental (for good or worse), everywhere, there rarely is a revolution. So small bits add up (look at iPhones, for example).

Look at all the clicks this announcement is generating.

No wait, look at all the clicks BMW is counting.

This is the real news! Can’t wait to see the colors they add, which are IMO desperately needed.

The 3rd car I ever owned was a 2002 Mazda Protege purchased late in the model year right before the 2003's came out. In 2003 Mazda released a Mazdaspeed version of the Protege which was about a million percent better (about $7 to $8 K more. They added a turbocharger to the 2.0 liter n/a motor, came with really sweet wheels, new body components, cool interior, way better stereo system, and other stuff. I was soooo fricken pissed and wanted out of my 2002 Protege as soon as I heard about the new car.

This M2 scenario is nowhere near the same but as a recent buyer of a 2024 it's a little annoying. None of the 2025 updates are going to matter that much to me but I know I will be tempted by the future comp or CS models assuming BMW does produce them for the M2.

I wonder if this will actually change the dyno numbers, lol. Just like how the B58TU1 was rated at 335hp or whatever but was actually making that to the wheels, then BMW bumped it to 382hp but the dyno never changed.

lol similar situation here that my number jumped from #7 to #1 in one month and March Prodcution. I’ve already waited for a year and waiting another at least 6 month until production is really gonna be a PITA.

In my opinion this is just marketing strategy. Knowing that the G87s already producing more hp than advertised it is only appropriate for BMW to take advantage of that fact and use it in there strategy to continue to encourage people to buy the G87 product. But if it is true that they spent more money to reconfigure something to allow more horses then why not advertise that fact as well. Only time will tell when 2025 owners will dyno there car for bragging rights to really show a power bump. Also another way for them to sell more automatics giving you more reason why its superior to manuals. Who would have thought that killing the DCT would increase manual buyers making it half of the over all sale. I love the M brand because it allow me to enjoy a car with performance car specs within my budget up until I can afford (which will probably never happen) a 718 GT4 or better yet a 911 GT3. I'm no expert just trying to be a sensible guy.

I’m sorry, I’m trying to understand what you’re saying here.

- They will in fact advertise the car has a 20hp bump
- why would it be a way to sell more autos, if both cars get the hp bump (to be confirmed)
- killing the DCT has not increased manual buyers, since the F87 had a 53% manual take rate and the LCI of the F87 kept 50%. If the G87 is at 50%, the take rate is lower or equal to the car that had the DCT as an option

Given those, not much else is new other than a slight improvement over year for the car, which is good

I care more about potential new colors because power wise, 20 HP is nothing and my car will eventually be modded/ tuned so 20 hp will be irrelevant

So the sti had a bump in hp for the last 2 or 3 years for the last production run. I did trade up. But it was nothing, what was the most improvement was the change in 3rd gear. It really improved the car, that is what I would make me jealous is a better gear ratio.

I have a modified 2020 STi that makes as much power as my M2
Small bumps in power from year to year never bothered me because I always did power mods. Had an 07 STi, 2011 STi and have a 21 Bronco 7Mt all
With power mods. I agree with you on gearing changes or
Even Better steering racks. When the VA STi got that killer hydraulic steering rack I had to put one in my 2011.

I’ve traded up for better interior, colors etc but not 20 HP.

I had 3 Mazdaspeed Proteges... a yellow and two orange. From full show car/built engine/custom turbo kit builds, to tube chassis drag car builds, and the last one I left as a DD (which turned into my autoX/track car on the weekends since my other two were under construction for most of their lives). Man, those were great cars back then! What gave me the bug, and what got me into my first e46 M3... since then I haven't looked back! Except the one time I owned an S4 for 7 weeks... but I don't like to talk about that much...

This is awesome!!! You were deep into it the MS Protege. I didn't finish my story above but I did end up trading in the base Protege for the Mazdaspeed version. It was the dark gray with the darker silver wheels, and I think it had the mid-cycle refresh spoiler as well. Thinking back I think the first MS Protege's that came out shared the same spoiler as the MP3.

I did all the bolt-ons: FMIC, air intake, blow off valve, turbo back exhaust, lowering springs, boost controller, etc. At peak power it was something like 215 wheel HP up from around 150 from a stock dyno run. This was the car that got me interested in the tuning and sports car world. I sold it in 2010 and then didn't get back into a sports car until 2021 with my M240i, and then onto the current M2.

So many good memories but I wonder if there are any out there that are not rusting away in a junkyard.
