Color Conundrum

Current order is for Portimao Blue. Four days off from work, pouring through this site, watching countless YouTube videos, I am now leaning toward Thundernight. I don’t think I would regret either one, but the uniqueness of the Thundernight really has me leaning toward a change tomorrow. It’s never easy.

Same here. I have an order for PB, but the Thundernight is such a great color. At first I liked it but thought it would be too gaudy, but it really has grown on me.

I haven’t seen PB in person, but I’ve seen the red and thundernight. Thundernight is super dynamic depending on the lighting and looks completely different in person than it does in most photos. The builder also does a terrible job showing how thundernight looks.

I have the Blue... its beautiful in person and sporty to boot. I loved the dark Purple also but thought that would wear on me over time

I've seen Portimao Blue in person and it is amazing! I test drove an M340i a while back and it was the only colored car, a beautiful blue in a sea of grey, black, and white cars. I fell in love with the color on the spot and that's why I'll be ordering my M240 in PB. I've considered thundernite…but the purp is not for me

I'm leaning toward thundernight; it hides all of the black plastic better than blue, but isn't as high maintenance as black

Portimao blue has very purplish undertones, so maybe consider it best of both worlds lol

Honestly it kinda feels like I have a black car again with how high-maintenance this color is. It gets dirty just by looking at it😂

That being said, I don't regret choosing Thundernight at all whatsoever. It truly is a stunning and versatile color. I haven't gotten as many compliments on any other car I've owned.

Iwent with PB on my M340, but honestly on the M240 I have to vote TN. TN is an amazing, vibrant color! But here are some pics of PB if you needed any help in deciding.

I ultimately went for Mineral White Metallic just because I did not want to deal with a dark color and swirls/dust. I love the the thundernight look but keeping it clean seems to be a pain imo.

When we took delivery there was a thunder night next to our BSM in the delivery bay. I would stick with PB unless you know you are hot on purple in general.

I think blue is more timely and will not fade in demand. In general purple, is more faddish and will not maintain as high a resale value unless you find that special purple lover. Although I love the TN, it is very tempting, PB is a great tint of blue and was my choice.

Please do your self a favor and get leather seating material (preferably black with blue stitching) and red calipers. You will greatly enjoy this combination and ensure resale demand later if you sell.

Hey I feel your pain. I scoured the web for photos and videos in the week where I was going to put my order in and my decision went back and forth every day, sometimes a few times per day. I was loving PB but I just sold my Montecarlo Blue M5 and I didn't want two blue cars in a row. I also had a white M3 before and my other family car is also white. Black is a pain and I had that before and BG is too gray for the regularly overcast Pacific Northwest. PB looks awesome in the sun but that would mean half the year my car looks like the overcast skies. I considered red but my wife didn't like it and it isn't as good as Imola Red or Toronto Red. So it came down to TN and my rationale was that it's a new color and a unique one to the M240i (for now anyways). In the past a color like this was relegated to pure M models only. If anything, I would say that it's a little less special now because so many people have chosen it. But at the rate of production, I think it will still be a while before i see other TN M240i on the road.

Same here. Recently was driving and noticed someone on a motorcycle was on my left. I looked over and he was shaking his head up and down mouthing "Nice color" while riding.

Thanks for all your comments and insight. I have decided to stick with my original build color of Portimao Blue. The purple is beautiful, but I am unsure that I could live with it long term. I started to consider black, but swore years ago never to buy black again. Now, don't be surprised if I change my mind again tomorrow.

The blue is a great choice! Went with thundernight myself since there aren’t many purple cars on the road and my last two bmw’s have been blue, so it was time for a change. Had I not just had two blue’s in a row I’d probably have gone PB myself, TN and PB are the best two colors for this car imo.

I do wish they offered a green, that would have been a nice option as well. It gets tiresome seeing all the brands offer “blue, black, white, and grey” as the typical color choices.

These are the 2 colors I am down to, but right now would choose thundernight if it came down to the wire.

I am wondering, does BMW typically introduce and/or discontinue colors during the MY run? I would love to see this car in yellow or something leaning towards gold. Also, a little surprised it is offered in 2 choices of white and no silver or dark gray.

I love my TN and if there had been mineral gray I would have gotten thst and never would have enjoyed TN lol. Amazing how things work out. I heard with the 50th anniversary, M and M-lite cars could get the new bandging and previously retired M colors, but the colors and have MIA. Maybe BMW realized that would be a big lift.

I would of loved the color I had on my 2019 GS. Shadow Gray Metallic. It picked up so many different colors in the sun.

I've had my thundernight metalic m240i for about 6 weeks now so here are my thoughts about the color.

First, I've seen people on this thread dismiss it as just a regular purple. This shade of purple is really special and must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Half the compliments I've received for my car have been specifically about the color of the car.

And when people hear I've bought a "purple" car, you can almost see the recoil in their faces. But then when those same people see the color they become believers in it and love it!

[Edit: When I was picking up my car at the dealership, a guy walked up to me and told me he just ordered an m240i and switched his color to purple after seeing my car]

With that said, sometimes the color draws too much attention for my liking. I think if I had a blue or red m240i, my car wouldn't stand out so damn much. I know if a cop were to radar a bunch of cars going over the speed limit, my car would be the easy to pick out because there simply aren't many other purple cars out there.

So that's really my only complaint about the color...it's almost too good of color. But if I could choose the color all over again, I would still have a hard time not choosing the purple.

I think Thundernight metallic purple is actually a very simple color .. not too flashy; just right, IMO! - and super-special NO REGRETS. Gave my baby a wash in the nice Buffalo weather today…
