What other people may have doesn't diminish what I personally would like.
I don't think a Tesla is a good example anyways, not for me at least, because the cars are not desirable in any way in the first place. You may as well have used a Honda Civic as an example. What if the GT3 RS was extremely prevalent... would it be less special? Absolutely not to me. Not even if my neighbors on both sides had one. I think this depends a lot on how much a person cares about appearances or what others have. It's weak minded shit really. |

Scarcity + desirability breeds value.
No one wants your '74 Vega

its all relative.
you could make the case an M3 is just a modded 340i, a Lambo Urus is a VW atlas, an F8 tributo is just a 12 year old 458 with turbos, a GT3RS is just a 911. And on and on. buying special car isn't that difficult either. banks will finance anything. you could have one guy stretching himself to lease a 911 for 24 months and another guy paying cash for a boxster and not even sweating it.

since owning my 1M for 8 years now, I have only seen ONE other one on the road! love how unique it is—the downside is that everyone who does know what it is, is constantly asking me about it—in traffic, while my kid is sleeping in the back lol

Car can be good if it's common, but it won't be special. Not until it's died off enough to be out of the mainstream and mundane.
Special means special. No wow factor if it's on every street corner. Who cares when they see a Starbucks? Well, maybe a bad example to most. Dunno if a Tesla can ever be special.

I would say, it depends.
Do you have a sentimental attachment to the car? What attracted you to the car. A lot of people drive Vipers not because they are the fastest cars on the road, but because of what they represent. If they sold 25,000 Vipers every year instead of 2,000 I think they would be much less special. There is a certain "It's Special" aspect to being the only one around. |
