BMW E90 RLS Retrofit DIY

Hi All,

I know there's been some discussion but there hasn't been an answer given to this. Whenever someone raises a RLS retrofit, it is quickly dismissed. I have been asking the same question for a while now and I only recently found the answer after looking for ages.

So I thought Why not give back to the rest of the community and share the knowledge?

For all those interested, my BMW e90 was without a RLS and I prefer the lights to come on without having to do anything similar with the rain sensor. - So here is the guide of what you need to do.

You will need a RLS switch, RLS stalk, RLS prism, an extended mirror cap ( I will attach an image and links of everything) I am from the UK so the links would probably be UK seller's.

The schematics of the RLS wiring is -

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...inputs/upOxh9C

Installation location - https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e90-328i-lim/RS71SKM

When you take the plug out of the FZD (roof module) it is labelled on the back of it what number the pins are. From some wiring schematics, I found out to Install pin 8 as the power +, pin 7 as the power - and 6 as the bus wire K-CAN. There are 4 cables connected to the RLS but only 3 need to be connected

I bought this cable from eBay and fits like a glove this connects to the RLS :- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-St%C3%B...72.m2749.l2649

The wiring will need to be cut at the end and attached with a pin to go into FZD link for this is -

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/autom...30393738303826

For the RLS to be stuck on the windscreen you will need a prisms, please ensure it is lined up properly before it is stuck on as this will be difficult to take off - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-SER...oAAOSwXPNaGCqm

Once everything is coded you will need coding NCS Expert will need to be used and if you aren't sure what to do please take it to someone who knows what they are doing as you don't want to brick a module -

Code $521 to the. Vo, modify the fzd, nfrm and RLS with the required settings and that's it! You now have auto lights and auto wipers!

In the case your auto lights work and you rain sensor doesn't use INPA to calibrate the sensor, follow this guide -

I hope this helps! Also, I did not change the windscreen or anything like that this is a standard windscreen some people say you need a special windscreen this is not the case I can assure as it works on mine.

Feel free to ask any questions, I will attach images to help.

Credit to Hallamnet and his advise on this retrofit

This is the prism you need to attach it to windscreen. Make sure you line it up before placing as it will be difficult to take off.

Is this the part numbers for the items? Struggling to find all the items required for this retrofit.

RLS Sensor: 61359224853
RLS Stalk: 61319169404
RLS Prism:

I can't find any other items you've used, maybe you can help further

Edit:
Maybe this will help?

Hey bro are you from the UK? What parts are left? Most of the remaining parts were ordered from eBay anyway from a breaker.

Let me know what else is remaining?

My question is, will this retrofit only work with a windscreen that will accept the sensor?

Yeah retrofit will work without having to change the windscreen. Cool you have most the parts just need to wires, cable clip and the sensor attachment.

Do you have links for those?

This is what my windscreen looks like, can it still be done?

The original link of where I've purchased from has been removed from eBay.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191740167086 i found this one but it's from China so u may need to wait.

I can have a look if I've got any spare. For the clips I ordered some from rs but I know ebay sell em too.

I've attached a few pics. I've not taken a close up pic but you can tell where the sensor is placed. I never bothered with painting the area black and I've left it as it is.

I can attach a close up pic if you like I can do this later. See below.

Interested in doing this, great thread. With the wiring do you need to splice into any of the existing wiring or are you creating a new loom that just plugs in?

I’m thinking of doing this for my next retrofit.

Can I just ask what may be a stupid question, but my window has that black patch thing on it with no “gap” for the sensor to look through. Do I need to use a new housing for the sensor and prism or do I use my existing one? If so do I have to scratch off some of the black stuff?

It seems on face value like a simple retrofit but this part I’m not sure on.
