New Vanos Recall (23V-707)

Hi all,

Just got a notice about a new recall for the Vanos bolts. Not sure if for N52 only or if it also applies to the N55.

Text is below:

Artachment to B11 09 23
October 2023
SAFETY RECALL NOTICE
To: All Center Operators, Sales Managers, Service Managers, Parts Managers and Warranty Processors
RE: Recall 23V-707: Replace VANOS Adjustment Unit Screw Connection - B11 09 23
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective October 23, 2023) on a certain number of Model Year 2010 - 2013 BMW vehicles that were produced between September 2, 2009, and July 12, 2012.

Please be reminded that it is a violation of federal law The Safety Act) for you to sell, lease or deliver any new motor vehicle covered by this notification until the recall repair has been performed. This means that Centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to consumers until they are fixed or use/sell replacement equipment/parts subject to this recall. Note also that substantial civil penalties apply to violations of the Safety Act.
Also, you should not sell, lease or deliver any Certified Pre-Owned or used vehicles subject to a safety recall until the repair is completed.
Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of recall parts.
We appreciate all your assistance with this Recall.

How do we know? I have a 2011 built at the South Africa plant in October 2010.

Not sure. I only found out as my 528i’s VIN was flagged, and the car was at BMW for service. Doesn’t pop up yet on the BMW recall page.

Thanks for the heads up!

I recorded this youtube below imploring that this initial recall expand to e91s models that were left out of the original recall and extended warranty action. I also filed a complaint with the NHTSA and others did this too. Reaching out to BMW NA was not only a waste of time, but the “Genius” from BMW kept telling me that the recall didn’t apply because my N52 was actually a 4 cylinder engine! Huh?

As my faulty Vanos bolts failed several years back, I completed the repairs according to the BMW RCRIT procedure which cost time and money for a valve cover, ESS, special tools etc. Let alone the bad Vanos bolts that ended up in my oil pan. As others suggested, I kept track of costs and time.

Now I’m wondering if there will be any compensation for owners that had the faulty Vanos bolts repairs done at their own expense before this “better late than never” recall? That’s assuming the e91 from 09-13 were actually included.

Up until 8/2011 from what I remember- in the USA they were covered under a previous recall. Looks like this one is for the N52 only.

Back in 2014 my 335i was recalled for this and now my 128i is eligible. Not sure why the N55 was recalled back then but the N52 was not - I can certainly confirm that the N52 is vulnerable to the bolts breaking.

I was replacing my 128i valve cover and gasket earlier this year and just happened to notice that one of the Vanos bolt heads had broken off and several bolts were loose so I ended up replacing them all during that repair. I wish this recall had come about last year - I would have got a free VCG replacement and the bolts replaced...

So the question is for some of us who made, or had the faulty bolts Vanos repaired, what recourse do we have, and how do we close the open recall?

I looked at NHTSA when I saw this on the 11th and nothing came up, tonight it comes up. Now to see how long before BMW gets it together so we can all get this fixed.

I just received the notice for my car, and I've already replaced the bolts on my own. Hope we're able to be reimbursed for the expense.

According to this 11-14-2023 Consumer Reports article: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars...s-a1359699142/

"Owners who have already paid to fix this problem before this recall was issued may be eligible for reimbursement from BMW."

Not sure whether this would apply to those of us who replaced the bolts ourselves and I also don't want to keep receiving open recall notices when my car has already received the remedy.

How do we know if our vehicle is part of it? Just wait for a letter?

So, is BMW saying my 07/2009 build E91 is safe from this issue?

No idea. Call BMW Canada and ask. Even better, get your service records from the dealer and see whether it was already done in the past.

I ran my VIN with BMW Canada and it says I don't have any active recalls. Either the database is not updated yet or I'll have to wait for a notification in the mail.

Dealers in Canada will not give out service records from previous owners. It's total BS.
This recall is not listed for my VIN either. And I was being a little sarcastic since they arbitrarily chose 2010 MY as the cutoff, which I don't understand.

It is my understanding that if you're the current owner of the car and can show them the ownership (title), they can provide previous service records.

If not, yeah it's BS.

Run your Vin on the BMW recall site. My 2011 e91 showed 0 recalls two days back, but the new recall showed up last night.

But I fixed it two years ago. Here’s my Vanos saga:
