My feedback from running M240i on Nurburgring Nordschleife

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey everyone ,

Today I took my M240i on the Nurburgring Nordschleife! Thought I would share some feedback on the car regarding tires, suspension pushed near its limits.

Tires Settings: Cold: Front 2.6 bar 90° & Rear 2.6 Bar 90°

Tires Hot (Post Lap) Front 3.1bar 142° & R 3.0 bar 122°

Tires: PS4S* (OEM)

Suspension: M Adaptive

Brakes: Fully Stock

Car Setting: Sport + & DSC Fully Off

Air Temp: 65° F

So, let's start with tires & pressures.

PS4S tires are phenomenal if anyone tells you other wise they are completely wrong & most don't even drive at the limit of this tire. It is a fast tire but the pressures need to be correct for the weight of the car & that is with any tire. Tomorrow I will start with 2.1bar F & 2.2 bar R. The tires got "greasy" towards the end of the lap so reducing pressures should be good to go. This was a test lap to see how the car behaves.

Suspension: Very surprising. Car did not want to roll I took the curb out of fox hole, wipperman, and did a small jump at Pflanzgarten and the car was planted. Miles ahead of the factory suspension on my previous F30 340xi with eibach springs.

Brakes: *VERY SURPRISING*everyone over in the G80 forums are crying about the rear brakes & tbh quite respectfully they work extremely well. I will admit I was a bit nervous myself. My previous car I had M Performance brakes with Endless ME20 Pads & Stainless Lines. I had a 30 minute chat with George from Apex Nürburg & the *ONLY* thing they have changed are the brake pads. They are waiting TüV for stainless lines. We both agreed that these cars need to be driven with DSC Fully off or you will eat through pads. Enough said.

Overall Thoughts: I love this car it is way more confident than my 340 and it is so fun driving on the Nordschleife. Tomorrow I will adjust pressures and report back to this forum. For now enjoy some pictures

Wow, great summary! Keep us posted on tomorrow's session! Glad to hear that the OEM brakes are up to the task.

I am hoping to take my M240 to Watkins Glen (or another US track) at some point this summer. Our cars both have the High Performance Tire and Cooling package so the data should be comparable. I will make an effort to post tire data and lap times when it happens. Thank you for sharing this information!

*Update*

So…

Misha did a lap in my M240 and we made a video so stay tuned for that ! He is a much faster driver than me (obviously) and he had some positive feed back and some takeaways. I did an additional lap afterward just to get one more in before track closed.

Tires: started with 2.0 bar F & 2.1 bar R. Worked perfectly

Tires hot got to 2.8bar which is perfect.

His positives : power is perfect and the car obviously more RWD biased than the previous Xdrive models and the M Performance LSD helps out tremendously.

His takeaways: weight (given), car tends to oversteer but we may be able to correct this with a track alignment. For the Brakes just step up to a better pad, suspension is too soft for the weight of the car.

Keep in mind this is the Nordschleife which is extremely bumpy , has a few jumps and major elevation changes. So tailor your alignment to the track you drive on.

Final Thoughts: with some light modifications this car has major potential. Our only drawback here is the weight unfortunately.

Thank you for this summary! You are living my dream, I try to do a lap or two daily on Gran Turismo as that as close as I can get right now. I've often wondered how the G42 would drive. My only question now is what type of lap times do you think you could average with this set up?

BTG , with the right driver ..maybe 7:55-7:58. Misha drove a lot faster than I did so I'm waiting on our video to see the time. Then we could get a better reference.

Also we hit speed limiter on Schwedenkreuz. Those high speed sections on the track is what makes the most of the time.

I was pacing around 9:15-9:30. Still trying to learn the car and and see how far I can push it. We didn't have the tire pressures set correctly until the second day.

The German magazine Sport Auto just did a full lap in 7.59. The supertest with the entire story just came out on Friday.

All great feedback - thanks for sharing!

On suspension, I would agree that I would want sport mode to provide more firm dampening for track conditions. I wish the dynamic suspension provided a bit more of a difference. However since this car will rarely see the track, I think it is ok for me for now. This is the benefit of the M2.

If you ever have alternative alignment specs for the car to share, I think many would appreciate it!

Amazing! I'd love to hear how you improve your times as you continue to dial in the set up.

It’s in the magazine, not on a website. They usually publish this a while after the print edition on their website.

Didn't realize they had such a comprehensive record of Nurburgring and Hockenheim lap times, really cool.
