100% fact! The work force is tiny at the Mexican plant, especially in comparison to Plant Spartanburg, BMW’s largest factory.

only thing that's annoying me is that, it will take longer on the little ship to get here (UK). I hope they'll use a nuclear powered boats as for the car looks...etc i have an F87 comp and i am looking forward to it. I just want to see all of it and no doubt will get it but this time in manual

That's what us NA buyers have had to contend with for years so we know where you're coming from. The wait during transport is maddening. On the bright side you get to track it traverse the Atlantic. ...and hope the ship doesn't sink like it did with all those Porsches.

Those "gaps" will be air vents.

The vents are covered with wrap, but you can see the outline.

Her point was that German cars built in Germany will have better conceived quality than German cars NOT built in Germany. I mean, I guess I can see that point of view.

Honestly, the bottom line is going to be how well these hold up in the long run.
'Certain buyers' will certainly be bothered by certain aspects of any consumer good ;-)

Beyond Euro-delivery fans and enthusiasts/internet anoraks, few will care and most will realise they live in the 21st century and it's not the 80s anymore. Especially since BMW have had plants outside Germany for ages now.

As far as I'm concerned, they can manufacture it in Kabul and it won't bother me as long as nothing besides the car gets to me

I'm not sure how to articulate it into words but I'm not a fan of this exaggerated tacked-on looking widebody rear quarter panel..

I like some smooth creases with a subtle hit of muscles.. 😗

The BMW designers are doing too much..

Funny bc im completely the opposite. The abrupt fenders are actually one of the main reasons im interested in this car, besides it most likely being the last manual. As a 1M owner, I clearly have a type 🙂

I guess you're getting it exactly how you want..

However, BMW, even going back to the 1M, didn't really did go after the boyracer crowd. Their vehicle bodylines where classy, with a dash of grunt underneath the sheet metal. More a grower, than a shower - so to speak.

This new swoppy direction of the highlighted JDM-esque bodywork was unnecessary. We know what the M2 is, what it represents and who it caters to, no need for it to mimic the appearance of a Civic Type R.

Oh, that manual option.. 😉 BMW sure know what they was doing when they invested the resources to bring it back to at least the M2. It's really the only glue that's holding loyal fans onto the brand.. 😗

Like you, I prefer the classic bmw designs, but there's nothing we can do about it at this point. I think we'll have to reserve judgement until we see it in the flesh. My dealer rep who saw the car in person said the aggressiveness was a bit understated. So I get the feeling this car reads entirely differently in person than it does in pictures, like most modern bmws.

The competition and CS versions will look more aggressive and probably have more presence.

I'm sure this is just a me thing, but is no one else weirded out by the lack of mesh coverings? I don't mind the outer ones being open, but the large central one should have some mesh, kinda like the M5 LCI

You're focusing too much on the grilles alone. Look at the entire front bumper, tons of big air intakes protruding out the lower half and they are purposeful. I never bought into the excuse BMW gave that the huge grilles on the M3/4 were for cooling, that's such BS. The bumper on the M3/4 clearly goes right across those huge ugly grilles. They could have done something similar to the G87 and gave those cars purposeful openings for cooling. I for one am relieved the G87 didn't get huge grilles, they look stupid AF and serve no technical purpose. If it had them I would have written the car off no matter how good it was. I can't been seen in an aesthetic atrocity like that.
As one car tester noted, those huge grills expose the radiator to rocks kicking off the track. My gripe is purely aesthetics. BMW screw this one, I'm going P-car.
My son was always influenced by my affinity for BMW's. Now that he earns his own dough, he went straight P-car.

I am now about 75% confident that the preproduction model driven with the automatic, carbon buckets, M seatbelts, and the camouflaged carbon fiber roof was the competition model. Time will tell.

I posted some details in the "rear photo leak" thread after seeing the car last week at IMS. Not sure how to link it. A couple other comments.

- There are no vents behind the front wheels.
- Standing next to it, the side skirt / rocker panel protrusion was noticeably large. Larger near the front, smaller near the rear, or possibly a feeling based on surface angles and insets. You can see this in the pic of the b/w & colored camo cars.
- Fender flares look more boxy and larger than G42. You can see them in the colored camo pics pretty well. Didn't look like the b/w camo pic above with the red circle (from memory).

That is one part of the car I didn't see so unfortunately I can't confirm that little detail. I will say however that I would be extremely surprised (and delighted at the same time) if there was an open vent on the front fenders.
Well this sucks now that it seems it won't have them.
