I believe that tacky MSport coloring in front of the passenger has replaced said strip.

Correct, no M Tri-Colors on the dash strip directly in front of the front passenger.

They light up, so it would be complicated to retro fit something. Maybe you can code those silly lights out, I don’t know. They just scream M n00b to me.

Or pull the door panel and unplug the male connector, the power source.

That would work and shouldn't throw any codes on the dash, but I really wouldn't want to take the panel off. Last thing I want is to inadvertently introduce squeaks.

Those door cards are so tacky you could cover them with duct tape and they'd look better.

It's the only design feature of the car that I can't defend.

It definitely makes me feel I’ve outgrown their target demographic.

Those M colors illumination is extremely dim, you can’t tell they are illuminated until after dark. I have removed a 2023 G42 door panel and can say a few things: you will not get any obvious complaints from the car for unplugging those lights. Maybe a stored code somewhere. But I have been driving my car for a couple weeks without the passenger door card and there is no messages or cluster lights for it. The M panels in the door cards are “plastic welded” or melted on, thus removing them or trying to replace them with the standard illumination panel isn’t plug and play, but I’m sure you could do it with some effort if you can get your hands on the other light panels. The LEDs appear to possibly have individual unique addresses; swapping them out makes them not work, I was playing with it for other reasons. After putting the exact original installed units back, they work fine again.

As much as they stand out in photos, they might not bother you in person. They are quite subtle in the flesh. I was also slightly concerned they would make the interior feel juvenile. They don’t bother me at all now that I have it.

The white part is the reverse side of the M illumination panel in the door card.

This is what it looks like without the illuminated trim. Wish we could delete it from factory.

I can’t argue with your opinion but for me personally I think that looks even worse, the polka dots. I would prefer some simple “fiber optic” strips like the 3 and 4 series or my x3m have. But I can respect people not liking the M colors since it’s a typical tacky addition.

That's bigger and more complicated than I thought it would be. Can you adjust the light output for it in any way?

I don't love it either but prefer it over the illuminated one. I like your idea of having it covered in fabric. Hell, if that was just fabric with the M tri-colored stripes I'd be OK with it. It's the goofy pixelated styling and the fact that it's illuminated that I find gaudy.

If I recall correctly it just dims with the ambient light dimmer control. So you have to turn them all down to turn the M illumination down. The color itself comes from the overlay. The LEDs themselves are just white light when on. So I am assuming that the only difference from the standard illumination car, is the panel overlay itself, and the software being configured to only command white light from the LEDs at such addresses.

I would go check it right now but honestly the ambient light in the car is so dang dim overall I won’t even see it right now.. have to wait until dark.

So if the color comes from the panel and the light is white would it be possible to change the bulbs to another color, which might effectively dim the final product? There might be a fix for this with bimmercodes at some point though.

Stitching

Stitching would have been a tasteful flourish.
