As someone who is new to the BMW world, and a first time turboed car owner, I am naturally curious about eventually adding more power.

In the M240i's stock form, would adding a somewhat larger turbo assimilate and run correctly without any issues ?

Or are there specific modifications that need to be in place before even considered a larger turbo ?

Increased fuel and fuel pressure , ECU upgrades , transmission upgrades ?

And no, I am not asking about making 1000 hp or anywhere near that. I'm just thinking about the next level of performance beyond our current 400 whp / 500 ft lb that we are making in stock form.

And if FEMTO isn't part of the plans, would any major modifications be a waste of time.

Yeah, when you are upgrading turbo you would need to look into fuel, cooling, and others but most definitely you would need a DME unlock so that you can get a custom tune, as you will be pushing more power and airflow you need to ensure proper air/fuel mixtures, boost levels, and timing. Generally, the B58 can hold quite of bit of power before you would need other supporting upgrades. Most people just stick to FEMTO and custom-tune with stock turbos, downpipe, and maybe XHP trans-tune. with that, you are pushing close to 450+ of reliable power.

BTW: This is just from looking online and stuff, I don't have any personal experience with this so don't quote me on everything

That's kind of what I've gathered as well. Many people opt to go the FEMTO tune route, and increase power within the stock turbo and other stock equipment parameters.

I already have the AA downpipe installed , so I suppose I should just enjoy the car until I am willing to go 'all in' with the FEMTO. It's a pretty big leap going that route.

I've looked at the same dilema, you can upgrade the turbo without a tune, but you will get some more power, but little compared to having a tune.

DME unlock, OTS tune, turbo, custom tune.

I am hoping mission does get the unlock, the FEMTO is a PITA, then you can't OTA and if you need to unlock again, then FEMTO all over again.

I'm really hoping a USA option or unlock device comes out when my warrenty is over. If not by them FEMTO it is.

I really hope so. A US based option would be so much better.
But thankfully , like yourself , I've got time to wait it out.

In the meantime, maybe a set of lightweight 19s would help the car to feel more nimble and lighter on it's feet.
