G87 Fun Factor

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I'm in the order bank for a G87. I've had a Supra for the last 6 months that I bought as a bridge from an Alfa Giulia QV to the G87. Prior to that I've had other M and AMG cars.

While I'm excited about my G87 order, I can't help but be a little nervous about the "fun factor" or potential lack thereof. I was originally in the order bank for a G80 but, after finally getting to drive one, I pulled my order because it just felt too big and heavy to me. I'm hoping the shorter wheelbase of the G87 will liven things up a bit and help counteract the 3800+ pound porkiness...but I'm concerned about it.

The Supra, with its 2 seats, 3400 pound curb weight, and B58 feels light on its feet and tossable in a way that I know will be unrealistic for the G87. I'm hoping the extra power and M tuning will provide the experience we're all hoping for. I guess we'll find out soon(ish)...

Have you driven an F87? I think that would be a useful gauge. If you find that to be too big and heavy, you'll probably be disappointed by the G87.

I would also recommend driving F87 to make sure final decision. However G87 should be more playful then G80 due to shorter wheel base. Compared to Supra not sure.

The G87 was given a different damper setup in the rear, the same ones that are used on the G80 wagon. The M engineers said that was to make sure the M2 didn’t lose its playfulness.

I certainly have no idea how the car will drive; however, the weight and wheelbase are not direct contributors to a vehicle being "tossable" or not. The location of the center of gravity, think in 3 dimensions, is; specifically the height of it.

I drive a 5,100 lbs car with a wheelbase of 114", and it is very tossable because all of the weight is as low as possible (EV).

The agility of the G87 should be the least of your concerns IMHO.

I also cross-shopped the manual supra. But they dealers are playing their JDM games, so I walked. The supra will likely be more edgy, but early rides in the M2 suggest that BMW made them edgier than their big bros (M3 M4).

I would suggest to go back and watch the media test drives at the Salzbugring in Austria over the summer. I remember Joe Achilles saying that the G87 was definitely more fun, playful and nimble than the G80/82

A recent Instagram post from Horatiu at BMW BLOG, whom has driven the G87 at speed and on track.

Watch the driving reviews of the prototype G87s at the Salzburgring from June. They're all over YouTube.

They were all very positive and mentioned "fun" more than a few times.

I think this is a very subjective thing that depends on what you find fun in a car.

Generally, I split up the car-fun categories as;
1) lightweight, high level of grip, high cornering capability, easy to drive.
2) high power level, easy to break traction/oversteer, engine note, keeps you on the edge

Very few cars have both - GT3 is the most recent car I drove that felt perfect. Short of cars like that, sports cars will usually offer one or the other. If the M2 is anything like the G8X, then it's definitely more #2 than #1.

I think it will definitely handle better than the F87...As it should!

However, some of the fun of the F87 is just how wily it can be. It makes you respect it. So therefore, SOME of the fun factor might be lost on the new one.

Owning a G87 will be akin to that guy with the butt-ugly girlfriend, who behind the scenes is an absolute wolverine in the sack, loves sports, gets along with your friends, and isn't crazy - in other words, tons of fun, just not much to look at. The driving experience will no doubt be superb.

Drive a G80 and you won't worry about the fun factor of the G87 any longer

Reminds me of the old joke. What does a moped and fat chick have in common?
