N54 vs. N55

What do you guys think of the new e9x's?I saw this video on youtube that documents all the changes and from what I can tell they are great. What do you guys think?

I dont think the N55 will eclipse the N54 in the whole scheme of things, it more of a fork in development.

hence the 335iS with the N54 engine --- I see the N55 as a more economical (fuel consumption) solution, and the N54 as the performance solution.. a play for both views toward our existing market(s) -- look @ Ford's new offering -- v-6 305hp and 31 mpg -- go figure

The n55 does get really good fuel economy. On my 3700 cross country trek last week, I would routinely see mpg in the 24-28 range despite very high average speeds (driving through nevada at 2am). The 7 speed DCT seems to help though. Very tall 7th gear!

I don't know about that which is more fuel efficient or not, but my N54 is VERY efficient. I was getting 30+ mpg on a trip from Denver to Chicago with 2 people, fully loaded trunk + a cat in the back seat. ...and that's driving around 80 mph on the highway.

General feeling is that while the n55 will make peak (stock) torque earlier, it will fall off on the top end. This may not be true stock but when boost is pushed to 14, 15, 16 psi the one turbo is going to be less capable than the two on the n54.

I'll say that I also believe the addition of a MAF sensor on the n55 is going to make tuning MUCH more complicated. That coupled with the plethora of n54s out there and the aftermarket that supports them makes the n54 a better choice. We also know that the n54 is built like a brick shithouse.

I agree with this, I just bought a 535GT and broke it in with a 3000 mile weekend trip from Scotland to the Spanish GP at Barcelona. It had 15 miles on the clock when we left the house.
I didn't zero the trip computer at all, and after 3000 miles of say 10% crawling through city traffic, 90% high speed cruising (90-100mph) the car averaged 28MPG (IMP) which is about 25mpg for US gallons. I was prety inpressed with this for such a roomey car. Mine is the 8 speed auto and the top gears are TALL the revs drop right down when cruising. overall I'm very impressed with the car. It could use a bit more power of course... not sure what the power potential of this engine will be, much the same as the N54 I would think.
The New 550 is a very real possibility in the future, imagine the tuning potential there, I would guess 550 HP just for starters....

Shiv and Terry will crack the N55 as they did the N54 so I would not count on the N55 being any worse of a performer. Who knows, it may even have more potential with a big single aftermarket setup that may be less complicated. Time will tell but as it stands now, the N54 is a monster so the bar has been set extremely high.
