Dual oil cooler brainstorm

So because of my over heating issue on my non sport N54 I started the steps to get a oil cooler on it so I bought the oil filter housing gasket for the sport model. And now I'm researching oil cooler my ideal set up would be too get a dual oil cooler set up in both wheel wells because I feel like putting a massive one by the radiator (will be putting a csf radiator soon) will be bring too much heat to my radiator. Has anyone seen a kit or diy like this I'm trying to stay on a budget so nothing too too much. But if the oil cooler by the radiator doesn't effect heat soak in that area by a lot just let me know just want a efficient set up. Thank you for reading this

Why is your motor overheating? Are you tracking it, or just normal street driving? I don't have an oil cooler on my 335i, and even after several hard pulls...I have no overheating issues at all.

It gets up to like 250 driving a bit spirited but upgrades are coming soon and I'm planing for supporting mods I am planning on tracking with my friends because they all have m cars it's embarrassing when I'm the one who overheard and they don't

210 is in the middle but if I start to push it it can reach like 290

If you are getting that hot.....you have something else going on. No way it should be getting that hot... especially if you are just driving on the street. I have to work pretty hard to get mine over 220.....

I'm sure someone else will chime in...but 290 oil temps seems crazy high.

On track I would regularly see 280-290°f oil temps. An over sized CSF radiator helped. I finally diy’ed a dual cooler setup. Never posted it, I will look for a pic now.

Well he said his car didn't come with an oil cooler, so 250 while street driving spiritedly is certainly believable. Mine did the same even with the stock oil cooler. I will say that the CSF radiator has dropped those temps down a good 10-15 degrees. It used to sit around 240-245 during normal driving and get up to 250-255 when I pushed it. It now stays at about 235 and doesn't exceed 240 when pushed. I've also noticed that oil type may make a difference, but not enough data for an apples to apples comparison.

As for dual oil coolers, I think they should both have thermostats so the car can still warm up as normal and not take forever. The stock cooler sits right in front of the passenger side front wheel well and the fender liner has a vent to let air through. Not sure if a dual cooler kit exists, but I want to say I have seen 1 or 2 over the years.

My car doesn't have the factory oil cooler either.......normal driving on the highway and around town never gets it much over the middle 220 mark. If I drive it hard it will see 230's...but that's rare.

Who knows....maybe some motors just run hitter than others?

Guess so. From what I've read online, seems like you're the outlier and yours runs lower oil temps than most. You are talking oil, right...not coolant? The temp numbers you're mentioning sound more like the typical coolant temps.

.....he doesnt have one.

why is everyone in here trying to talk him out of an oil cooler instead of answering his question?

i had no oil cooler on my car, i do now, it runs much cooler and i prefer it. adding one was a good idea regardless if it was broken or not before

i plan to add this kit to my car before i take it to its first track day

Yep.....oil temps.

I do run the "sport cooling" mode option on MHD.....so that does keep my coolant temps down lower....so I'm assuming that also might keep the oil temp lower as well?

I can cruise all day long at 75mph on the highway in 90 degree heat and the oil temp will stay at 220 -/+ the whole time.

Do you still need the factory OEM oil cooler filter housing setup with that kit....or does it come with all of the parts you need to make it work on a non-oem equipped car?

My ideal set up would be one in each wheel well but I would then have to replace fender lining with it and wire it and also get air ducts and new vents so I'm really just wondering if putting it in front of the radiator will be the beat option

i mean, cruising? of course, why would bmw build a car that cant just drive down the road at a constant speed? its going to hold temp fine just driving around. plenty of cars without oil coolers doing that.

the difference is being able to beat on the car, in the heat, and not have an issue. or put your car on a track without a problem. because without a stock oil cooler at minimum, after a few pulls, its going to get hot and it will not cool off quickly.

you need the factory oil cooler for ANY oil cooler kit, no other way to hook it up

that particular one uses the stock cooler and adds another

Just install one oil cooler behind the kidneys. The area is large enough for more oil cooler than you could ever need. Use a quality one like Setrab for instance.

The N54's biggest limitation is the radiator. Aftermarket ones like CSF are worthless. Add an aux radiator or two in your wheel wells. You need roughly double to coolant cooling capacity if you want to beat on the car on the track.

I want to do this, but cannot find a writeup or a kit for it. Research (Jake @ Motiv) tells me it'll have to be inline with the stock cooler (ie the return line from the stock cooler feeds the secondary behind the kidneys). How do you do the connection to the oil thermostat housing?

I would ditch the stock cooler and just run one large one behind the Kidneys. It is easier in my opinion. You can keep the stock cooler if you want and add another in line as well. Up to you. They make kits for you for this: https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-5...ry-oil-cooler/

If you want to DIY use an oil block off plate like this: https://www.rbturbo.com/rbocdelete Then an extrnal thermostat like this: http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-th...tat-p-212.html an oil cooler like this: http://www.setrabusa.com/products/oilcoolers/index.html and finally some AN lines.

Or buy an off the shelf kit like this for example: http://www.hardmotorsport.com/hard-m...9x-335i-07-10/ or https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-33...ng/Oil_Cooler/ or https://www.turnermotorsport.com/BMW...bmw-oil-cooler

THANK YOU! That external thermostat looks ideal. I hadn't found such a part previously and have been using the BMS "sport valve" aka thermostat delete, which means 15 min warmup every time I start my car.

I'll probably do a custom setup so I can get the lines and fittings looking how I want them to be (all black--that red/blue stuff looks...really cheap lol). I'm definitely gonna do the dual cooler, in my opinion you can't have too much on this engine (Week ago I hit 277* after 10 minutes [1/2 to 1/3 session] on the track).
