I think my original battery is slowing dying (strange errors that get reported, etc)...

Battery World quoted $290 for the Varta battery. I think mine is non-AGM

Do you know if they need to, or can, register the battery with the car so it gets correctly charged?

What's your car mate?

I had some battery issues recently, mine discharged and gave errors.

The NRMA gave me a jump and noticed it took some change so they suggested instead of spending multiple hundreds on a new battery, spend $100 and buy a CTEK 5 amp charger and see if it will charge it up.

I did that and it works great! The CTEK I got is a 8 stage charger that will work to fix a dying battery, that would be my recommendation, chances are it just need a reconditioning and charge to full.

I also got the CTEK battery sense Bluetooth kit so I can see my batteries status over time from my phone.

Also you said battery world quoted you, did they perform their free battery test on it? Or just you just call and ask.

They should ev able to tell you if it's no good, and they can also sell you CTEK Chargers and accessories!

I just bought a ctek msx5.0 and thought it was fkd as it gets so hot when charging but apparently that's normal lol

I got one when my battery died and its been great
Registering battery just makes sure the car alternator is matched to your battery so it charges at the right rate, no need to rush you can drive for months without registering... someone on here should be able to do that for you

I bought a Bosch S5 574.035 battery from Independant Battery in Laverton here in Melbourne. Was $265 and I installed and registered it myself with INPA. Easy job. I would not bother wasting money on a charger trying to 'rejuvenate' a battery. If its already 6-7 years old there is no point, just get a new one.

FWIW the oem battery is made by varta (most european cars are)

I also got a bosch S5 mainly because a local auto electrician could supply one and they have a great warranty (3 years by memory) and I got mine fitted really cheap (by memory $165 - whereas the bmw dealer up the road wanted $680 or something for the battery plus installation and coding...)

I had advan code it as the battery had different specs to oem, and also register the battery using their autologic tool

FWIW I drove my car for about 8-9 months uncoded and the battery is still going strong almost 4 years later.

Someone in canberra definately should be able to do it im sure, one of the canberra boys shall be able to guide you on what shop to go to?

When my battery died on my 320i, I researched and found a Supercharge battery (sold at Autobarn) with very similar specs to the original BMW battery. Never had any issues!

I'm also in the same boat in Canberra and needing a new battery. Let me know how you go if you find something cheap. I'll be calling a well known workshop in Canberra to see if they can register batteries etc as I am due for a major service there relatively soon.

Not sure if to go for a Bosch s5 or a varta battery. If i can pick up a cheap s5 I will probably run with that.

I've been putting off buying a new battery since winter last year. I just read that Bosch S5 and Varta Silver Dynamic are both identical batteries, both manufactured by Varta so buy whichever is cheapest.

I believe MHD also has the ability to register the battery (under reset adapations). I'd have to try it out and confirm with INPA that it actually works though.

If you don't have INPA and do not replace the battery with a different type or capacity then you can give MHD a try.

I just rang Battery World and they said they said they have the 'scanning tool', but also said they've never had a problem before...so not sure whether that means they've never done the 'coding'

MHD is a flash tuning app on android for N54. You can upload a tune to make your car go faster with a phone. It also does code clearing and adaptation resets, with battery adaption being listed. Never tried it so no idea if it works or not.

Of course they don't have any issues with it, they've taken your money and you have no way of checking if they've done it properly unless you have INPA and can look at the last battery registrations (the car records the last battery registrations by mileage).

There are a lot formulas out there to calculate the Ah of a battery. I Would like to ensure that I get as close as possible to the correct Ah when if I need to INPA the new value in.

RC\2 + 16 = Ah
or
RC\2 = Ah
or
RC*0.62 = Ah

Which works best?
