the RS3's tires seem like they weren't up to the task lol. but I am surprised that it was that close in lap times.

That RS3 pushed like a stuck pig. What a hand full. Transverse engine/gearbox geometry just not good for handling. So much weight over the front axel/wheels. I see Audi had to put narrower tires in the rear to get this car to even turn. M240i looked good, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

My wife used to have an RS3.

If an M240 is that close to it, I can't wait for my next M2!

I own an M2C and I think the next M2 is not going to be visceral and exciting like the outgoing one.

The G-chassis is solid but is a little lackluster.

The automatic can't even be compared to the nerve wrecking DCT shifts.

Yes it will be faster and all that but I fear that it will be a little boring to drive.

In the same way the g80 is really fast and up to the task, but not as exciting to drive. I do agree that giving it the Zf to please the masses that like to drive their ///M cars in D mode, ruined the exciting shifts that dct provides. I would that paid $5k extra just to get dct in it and walked away from my allocation cause as good as it was as a daily, it just wasn't exciting to drive anymore. Had one for 24hrs and 350 miles, so plenty of seat time to know.

Wow, trying to get consistent times in the RS3 seems like a helluva task while the M240 xdrive seemed way more composed. Those poor tires on that RS3.....

The M240i looked so calm vs the Audi. Initially I thought this was an easy win for the BM. Was very surprised the Audi was so fast. Still, it is an RS vs M lite. Impressive!!

+1, turn in looks to be complete shyte, to quote the great Tiff Needell from his fifth gear review of the first RS4 (cool wagon), understeer, understeer, understeer. Little has changed it seems…

The chassis is phenomenal though…in fact it sounds like it’s too good for your taste even if anything 😂 the car is super composed which seems to not be your cup of tea. Absolutely blows away the outgoing m3’s chassis

If you find the G8x too composed it's because you're not pushing hard enough, coming from an F8x you have to 'reset your adaptions' to appreciate how capable the new platform is.

That said, considering the M240i is:

- heavier
- less powerful
- slower in a straight line
- wears slightly less performing tyres
- cheaper
- a non M-car

the lap time compared to the RS3 is definitely good and the Audi confirms that it is heavily understeering and highly overrated (as I thought when I drove it).
That's basically the same lap time as the A45 AMG S with PS4S, please take a look at the times of the S3/A35AMG (the equivalent of the M240i in Audi and MB's lineups).
The new M2 will be a beast.

But with Sport Cup 2 tires.

The F20 M140i did 2:03, just for reference.

Was the G42 wearing the standard tires or the optional?

The standard tires on the M240ix upfront are the 225 and for such a heavy car they are not enough. The optional tires are 245 upfront and they re proper Michelin PS4. So we need to know this
Now the non-M argument is wearing thin with the G generation of cars. The G42 M240ix blows the doors of most M cars of the past. Yes, it doesn't sound like a CSL, it's not pure like the E30 M3, it's not a legend like the M1, it is not primal like the E90 M3. But it performs. Throw some poly bushings and add some camber and the car will feel M with less than a grand.
Modern tech like advanced trannies and diffs is what makes fast cars today. And those are shared and traverse most BMW models

My 2nd favorite BMW. The xDrive version. The agility of that car is so good.
