BMW Keys

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Why hasn’t BMW redesigned their keys! I have a 2018 M550 and my 2024 M2 will have basically the same key. Tesla has a different style key plus a card that can be used, Genesis has a modern key as well... just to name a few. My Lincoln Aviator has a “standard” key but can be started with my phone or a passcode. Plus it can be opened on the door with a code.

I guess I just feel underwhelmed with BMW keys.

Can the G87 support a digital key fob? I would pay the money just to have something different.

I prefer the M2 key to the new iX/X5 etc.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I hate that people always use Porsche as an example but they have had the basically the same key fob for a long time

I don't understand why people get so hung up on keys lol. Just throw it in your pocket and literally do nothing else.

What does a keycard or phone access give me over that besides something that will break?

You want something like this crazy 7 series key from back in the day?

IMO - smaller is better. I don't want another largish device in my pocket. "is that your BMW key or are you happy to see me?" No thanks

I'd prefer a regular old key that you insert into the steering column so the key doesn't just float around the cabin or slide off your seat as you're driving.

2007-2011 era BMWs had a slot for the key in the dash. Not sure why they eliminated that slot.

Why would you not have in your pocket (or purse!)? If you don't have pockets, that what the cupholder is for.

I love just using my phone as the digital key on my G42. Much nicer not carrying around any keys, especially in the summer.

Going to miss it on the manual G87.

after owning a Tesla, I am so used to not carrying keys.....I would love M2 6sp have that option! I don't understand why digital key reserved for Auto only!

I understand for people who routinely carry a bunch of stuff out the door don't mind the physical key. It's in their pile already, so they don't see the value of not needing the key.

But for people who only carry their phone, license and a credit card and head out the door, it is SO convenient !

Sorry Greg, I must be "older school" than most. I have pockets (but no purse).

I'm the same way with buttons. I want more buttons (ie fan speed, temp) than the G87 offers.

I like the older fobs because they were smaller but not the ones that were keyed and needed to be inserted in the column. I do not miss the old days where my BMW key was attached to my keychain and every bump would make all my keys jingle.

I don't even carry the key with me. I use the digital key on my phone, which is crazy for me to even say. I never thought I'd be that guy, but it works so well I don't feel the need to carry the physical key.

I keep the key card the car came with in my wallet for emergencies or if I need to leave the car with someone.

Not too concerned with what the key looks like, but I'll be honest, I don't like the fact that a 2020 base model 228i with the m sport package comes with the exact same key as my M2 lol.

I'm annoyed that BMW (and most cars) still have keys. Hello! It is 2023. People have cell phones. The digital key card (in case you need to leave the car with a valet or dealer for service) is all that is needed.

Everything else should be done from your smart phone or smart watch.

Thats what I’m saying! M cars should have a different key.
But correct me if I’m wrong…. The 6MT won’t have digital key on the phone or a card which is REALLY annoying to me.
