Looking at FMIC + tuning on N55
I am considering the installation of an aftermarket FMIC and a revised tune.
I already have an upgraded charge pipe. I am not currently envisioning changing from my catted OEM downpipe. As I look at previous results, I see wheel horsepower of 300-310 with wheel torque of over 400 lb-ft, maybe as high as 450 is possible. But what is the steady state torque capacity of my OEM clutch? This makes me concerned that the performance upgrade I am considering will need to include the installed cost of a higher-performing clutch assembly, increasing the cost by more than $1000, and it may make the upgrade unfeasible. So first question is what is the torque capacity of the OEM N55 mechanical clutch? Mine has 92k miles on it. Does torque capacity degrade with mileage? If this has been covered in previous posts, I apologize. I did do a search and did not come up with and answer. 4 |

You won't need to upgrade the clutch as long as you do not upgrade your turbo.
I recommend a race intercooler since you will be running stage 2. MAD/BMS are really good options

As far as the clutch you could see some slip depending on how worn it is 90K + is alot.. This would depend on how it was treated but I can tell you I had clutch slip in the. 35k range when loading in 4-th and 5th with a stage 2 tune.
In regards to the intercooler we have two versions available the 5 inch Hd intercooler and the 7 inch race Hd cooler. 5 inch. https://mad-us.com/mad-013-mad-bmw-e...-stepped-core/ 7 inch race https://mad-us.com/mad-bmw-7-5-stepp...55-135-1m-335/ If you have any questions regarding any of them please let me know.

N55 Clutch holding Capacity
Well ECS told me that my stock clutch and flywheel could not be expected to hold more than 400 lb-ft torque. Posing this same question to FCP Euro did not get an answer at all. So this accelerates the cost of adding a FMIC and a tune and blasting the inlet valves with walnut shells to over $3k, which was unexpected. If this is the case, it pushes the overall cost to an area which I cannot justify, as I already have a track toy with "needs". Am I missing something? FMIC + tune + installation + walnut shell blast is a cost, and yet my stock E90 N55 3 series is still a very reliable and fun car. Why spend $3000 for an addition of 40 hp and 100 lbft torque, when the totals are governed by the small turbo capacity in any case?

My previous N55 with 38k miles and stock clutch would slip in very cold weather with a Eurocharged tune and stock FMIC. I wouldn't count on your stock clutch holding.

Clutch Torque Capacity
Just curious. What clutch did you use for the replacement and how is is holding up? Do you have any idea how much peak torque your engine produces with the Eurocharged tune?

I actually never replaced it on that car, only slipped once or twice in very cold weather. On my previous N54, it slipped badly on an OTS Cobb tune so I upgraded to the 335is clutch with a new OEM replacement LUK flywheel and was very happy. Held the power great and felt great and smooth.

OP
Do the upgrade and keep the clutch stock; if it starts slipping, upgrade the clutch as well. It sounds like its 50/50
