Snow tires are good enough for me

I wanted to thank everyone for their input about snow tires or trading in my 328i for an xDrive version. I got my snow tires early this week (Narrow Blizzaks on 16" rims), and this morning we got more snow (about 2" so far). I took the car out and was able to get up the hills that I was unable to in the last snow (and even other steeper ones) . PHEW!!!

So as not to start another thread war. The question as far as I was concerned was never if AWD was better in the snow than RWD/Snows. My question was if snow tires would be good enough. Thankfully they are. Obviously if I stay in this area my NEXT car will be AWD (especially since by moving here I have reduced my commute and the mpg is not as critical as it was before).

Thanks again to the early responders who said get the snow tires

imho they'll be good enough even at 10" (RWD).....I've never driven at more than that, I suspect the low clearance would come into play.

It is funny though when you can afford to get a new car instead of getting snow tires. I was thinking I wonder if our pres. would keep driving the Maserati in the winter, because there was an ice storm and he had that car with summers at the office. Of course wouldn't you know the next day he shows up with a LS460L. His secretary told me it's over 100k, there's some special rear power seats or something in the back. Nice to be the owner of a private co....

Well to be honest.... this summer after I moved into this new place everyone who saw the hills told me to trade the 328i in for a AWD car. I ummm spent the money on buying a Lotus as a third car. I now have 3 RWD cars (328, Boxster, Lotus) Thus having to buy a new car was a bit of a budget buster....

Good to hear you are happy with snows. Remember too that in deeper snow turning DTC off helps immensely to get moving.

And nice choice on the car fleet... A lotus at that! Very nice!

LOL the way I feel about it is when there's bad weather, there's a chance for mishap....so I'll drive the least $$$ car I have, i.e. my 1998 Nissan. But the 335 does have 4 snows, and it seems to do ok. Will slip when starting off if there's too much gas, but generally just fine.

You mean activating DTC helps. Switch it on... press DTC button once for on.

Default Setting: DSC on, DTC off. It is in the user manual.

With snow tires, I'm more worried about clearance issues more than moving around in the snow.

I am glad it worked out for you with putting on snows. You should get along fine with them. I still laugh because that other thread is still going on and on and on.
