Tire fit and sizing guide

Is there a good reference for understanding what tires fit with the different body types? Or maybe understanding sizing/staggering in general?

I am looking to pick up a set of wheels that are 255/45/18, but am afraid the front might be too large. I currently have the sport package on an '06 330i with 225/40/18 and 255/35/18. Any thoughts?

255/45/18 is too tall. The 45 means that the side wall is 45% of the width, which is 255mm.

255x0.35=89.25mm
255x0.45=114,75mm

And this means that the 255/45/18 tires are two inch taller than the OEM 255/35/18.

Ditto, you'll want to look into a 255/35/18 for the proper diameter tire.

225/40R18 or 235/40R18 for the front. Rears can be those sizes or 255/35R18.
