Left handed DSLR
I know this might sound hilarious but I want to scratch the DSLR itch once and for all (well, it's cheaper than the Porsche itch!!).
Went to a local camera shop just to get some hands on experience for the first time. Being left handed, it felt strange having the hand-grip on the right, leaving my left hand to adjust the focus. I was naturally wanting to hold the camera with my left and adjust with my right. Something I'd never even considered before. I'm guessing it's just something you get used to or will it forever drive me up the wall. Noone makes them the other way round. Any more left hander DSLR owners out there with any input??? Oh, yes, I'm prepared to be flamed here...

You will not get flamed for this don't worry i have heard people saying things like this to me before.
I myself am left handed and i also used to be a full time photographer its just something you will get used to using. Never be disappointed with the shots you take as any good photographer will take over 100 photos and maybe 3-4 of them will be any good. Photography takes years to learn and even when you are good at taking photos you will not be 100% happy yourself with your own work but most others will love it! Other than that having left handed camera is not going to effect you very much just takes maybe a second longer then a right handed person. |

Thanks guys for your input. Seemed a really stupid question and nothing I'd ever considered until I held one earlier today and it took me by complete surprise - of course it makes no difference with a compact.
Got to nip to John Lewis later so might have another little play. This seems an extremely keen price http://www.johnlewis.com/230882210/Product.aspx just not sure they have any in store (sold out online).

John Lewis completely out of stock however. 1200 on order with no due date so looks like it'll be the compact used for one more Christmas.

What size memory card is best i.e. not too excessive but sufficient - 16gb / 32gb???

Just got the 550D.
There are far better deals out there than John Lewis. Even specialist high street camera shops like: Park Cameras Clifton Cameras Bristol Cameras Or for more money Jessops All will post Or try Pixmania. I tend to go for a few smaller cards, if you lose one on holiday you don't lose all your work - diversity I sold the Nikon D70 Simple reason was the lack of good glass at decent prices. EVERYONE uses Canon, check out the papz. So there is a lot more SH glass around. PS - focusing Rog? Its a DSLR! Steve

Really, that's surprisingly low, won't the 'full' HD video sap the memory??? I'm guessing you can take millions of photos on any of the cards. They go up by doubling, 4, 8, 16, 32 - I reckon I'd be nervous getting just 4gb so might plumb for 8gb and see how it goes.
Just picked up a Canon 550d with the standard lens from Comet for £620 matching John Lewis as the cheapest on the market. Also got nearly £20 cashback by linking to Comet via Quidco. Job done.

Given its individual camera spec and not brand that will decide these factors. next time you are at a football game count the number of Canon versus Nikon users

Always good to have a few memory card options. I have two 8GB and one 16GB. Even at full res and RAW you'll struggle to fill them. |

Nikon are the biggest known brad camera used in sports photography as i used to do that exact type of photography. The shutter speeds used with Nikon are far better also the crisper shots when using multi shooting are far smoother. You go to F1 you will see most Nikon users as they are best at getting the shots. I'm not saying canon are rubbish as its down to what you feel is best for the shots you will be taking most of. That said i was a sport photographer and know the majority use Nikon though never did a football game.
The camera i have been using at the moment is a nikon D3 the worlds fastest camera 9 full frame shots a second or 11 half frame and the Canon camera compared to this is only 8 full frame a second that makes a BIG difference when shooting fast action. All this isn't important to OP as they are not a top photographer but Nikon is my choice and all ways will be. Also Nikon are much much more durable than a Canon. |
