Clear-coat peeling on 2020 M340i

I recently purchased a 2020 M340i. It's still under a CPO warranty which is being transferred to myself from the previous owner.

There are cosmetic imperfections along the edges where the rear bumper piece meets the rear quarter panels on both sides. They appear to be slowly progressing, and the rear left side appears to have clear-coat beginning to peel off on the corner of the rear bumper as seen in the picture.

I know the car was paint-corrected and ceramic coated by the previous owner some time in 2023. I'm not sure if that's really relevant or not.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this from spreading and fix it? Are clear coat issues covered under BMW's warranty?

The couple of times I've seen this (in real life) is when there's been bumper damage touched up, and they didn't prep well for the clear coat and so it begins to peel.

If you're a DIY-er you might try loosening that piece and going through a variety of progressively finer sanding / polishing steps and cross your fingers it stops at that edge.

You could try try the dealership, there's a chance they have record of it if it happened during shipping or transport to the dealer, and if so they'd need to fix this. No guarantee though because it can happen at that point in time and be taken care of under the radar and not recorded.

This likely isn't an OEM imperfection but rather the result of a bumper repair done when it was in the hands of the previous owner or during CPO certification.

Yep, dealer probably had it done as part of CPO certification. Take it back to the dealer, have it done properly (it wasn't before). Good luck.

Most likely not part of CPO prep, but simply a used car whose previous owner had a bumper repair. Certainly not part of CPO coverage but no reason you can't ask your dealership to help out since it was a recent purchase. Can't hurt.

Unless your Vehicle History report shows damage repaired either at the POE or dealership, then you have a different case.

LopsidedLand, do you have a CarFax report?
If yes, does it mention any repairs?

Our one/only CPO purchase (F30) had both front & rear bumper covers resprayed by Passport or the shop they use. Looked great & was mentioned on the CPO paperwork. Had to fight them to update the NAV maps from original 2013 to 2016 though!

The previous owner did tell me that when he bought the car (he bought if off a lease from the first owner) the paint was not in the best condition with a lot of swirl marks and sun damage. I don't know fully what he had done to fix it other than the correction and ceramic coat but it may have been something during that process I guess
