Any regrets going 2door? Cross shopping m340.

Sold my 22' wrx a few months ago, now i'm cross shopping the m240i and m340i. I really want a dedicated sports car that is daily drivable. Family of 5 with our youngest being 13. We have a 2020 Sequoia as the family hauler and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Wife and I both work from home. Occasionally I will want to drive the 240 to baseball practice/tournaments on weekends. Obviously the m340i has the space, but looking at videos/pictures I think there is enough room in the 240 to fit a cooler, and large duffel bag style bat bag..

Just a data point... I once put 3 people in the back of my 240 and one of them is a 6ft big dude lol.... Not comfortably for sure but it has the space

Did you really not like those folks at all.

I do miss a 4 door, and i hate the glacially slow movement of front seats to allow access to the rear. I've had a number of 2 door vehicles, but for some some reason on this one the rear area seems almost inaccessible to me.

The rear seats in the M240i are for 2 people and short trips or luggage.
I don’t even put kids in booster seats in the back, they get the front.
You could consider the M235i for 4 doors but the best way to find out is go to the dealer and see.

PS in with danallxt the “speed” the front seats move at is enough to stop you using the back altogether.

No regrets for me, but there will be regrets for you with a young family of 5.

I would get a 340 if I were you, without question. In fact, get a low mile 2020. Its pre-mild hybrid. ECU is already unlocked, and with just an m-performance exhaust sounds amazing.

If I didn't buy my 240 during the car shortage, I would have gotten a loaded, used 2020 340. I'm trying to talk my wife into trading in her subi for one as we speak.

I wouldn't mind having a 4 door car, but I don't like how the kidneys look on the 3 series. They have that fake/closed mesh towards the top which looks cheesy. This may not be a deal breaker for some but it was one of them for me.

DINKWAD😋, here and it’s the daily, no concern about space in the back. When i did have 4 doors never really used except occasional groceries and errands, but that’s what the trunk is for.

I had a M340 for 3 years and now have an M240. I drive my 7 year old and 5 year old to school every day. No issues. They are comfortable back there. I personally do not miss the 4 doors at all. I love the coupe look and this car also has great trunk space. The one annoying thing as has been motioned is how slow the seats move forward and back to acces the rear. Aside from that no issues.

No regrets. I love 2-Doors with back seats for the kiddos. 95% of the time no one is in the back seat. Kids are old enough now to sit in the front when running them to Soccer practice or volleyball. Even if we run out as a family, it's just a roomy, if not more roomy then my 2015 Challenger SRT 392.

I recently took my car in for some work, and they gave me a 330i as a loaner. It felt bigger, like unnecessarily bigger. I like the smallness of the M240i. Then I had a 540i which felt like a BOAT compared to the M240i.

BUT, if you need the back seat 30% or more of the time, I would maybe consider the M340i. . . but I just love the sportier look of the 2-Door.

EDIT: Now, the M240 does only have two back seats, where the M340 has three. AND, I like the grill on the 240 vs the 340.

I actually am buying the car because it is a 2 door. For my back, it is easier to get in and out of than most of the small 4 doors because of the lack of a B pillar. I am 6 feet tall but getting into most small 4 door cars is hard because the drivers seat is behind the B pillar.

With a 2 door, I can sit sideways and then pivot into and out of the car without fighting around that B pillar.

The M340i isn't as bad as most but the B pillar is still in the way compared to the M240i.

I only have 1 child but hes 8 weeks old so I require rear facing car seats. What I found was the one we have Nuna pipa lite rx with the base made the front passenger seat somewhat useless. Loading it from the passenger side was also near impossible without some tilting and twisting. What I found was loading the seat from the drivers side in-between the front two seats works amazing. Baby is young enough wife needs to sit next to him so she just sits behind me 5'10" her 5'3". Figured I would add this incase anyone was like me looking for rear facing car seat info.

It's the small details I've appreciated with my first 2-door car.

The peripheral vision is so much better with the B pillar further behind you.

The doors are long and well weighted. Normal doors on a 4 door car feel like chicken wings in comparison.

The frameless glass windows are 10/10.

Only having to clean the inside of 2 doors vs 4 when giving it a wash.

The only inconvenience to me so far has been getting my 25kg dog in and out. I fold down the back seats and put her in the boot for her to climb through.

Only thing that irks me about the 2 door is how long the doors are and how wide they swing out. If you have a narrow garage space like I do, this can be problematic having to watch for walls or other cars, or crane your way out of the driver's seat. Other than that it's great. Having such a long swept side window pushes the B pillar back behind the driver and greatly reduces air noise "buffeting" at higher speeds.

Depends on your needs, honestly.

If it's a secondary car for the weekends, I think a coupe is better, but like the post above says, if you have a smaller garage and try to park into smaller spaces, the doors can make things a bit of a challenge. I just bought a house and in the garage, I have to park at an angle to open my door enough to get out when my fiancee is parked beside me (i'm not a smaller person, she has no issues getting out lol... reason to get back into shape i suppose...)

other plus - 3 series are everywhere, 2 series (at least up here still) are not at all. I get a lot of waves and nods of approval that I don't think I'd get with a 340i.

last thing - you can fit quite a bit into the car with the rear seats down. Sure you can't get to it quite as well compared to having rear doors, but the trunk space isn't small.

Thanks. I'm heading to a local dealer this weekend, they have a 2019 mpeformance pack m240 xdrive for 39K. I really like the f22 chassis, and they are 10-15k less than the m340 i've been looking at. Plan to take my golf bag and my sons large baseball duffel bag to see if it fits. If i can get a small cooler and the duffel bag back there I think I can call it good.

This is the one thing that scares the hell out of me. The way they have to slide down when opening the door makes me think that if that fails I either have to break the window to open the door or if it's stuck up then it will shatter when I close the door. I don't see many threads complaining about issues with this, so maybe it's done properly and isn't an issue?

I think door will open and close even if the window doesn't drop. My e46 coupe is the same. As far as I can tell, the the window drop is just to open up airflow so the door will close easier (cabin is fairly air-tight otherwise). If battery is dead or missing, doors still open even though the window doesn't drop. Based on the design of the e46, there is no risk of the window breaking. I'm pretty sure this is the same on the G42. I can verify when mine arrives in October

Thanks anon, I suspected that there was a failsafe for this issue. If there a dealer closer to me with anything in stock I would go look at it myself. Time for a roadtrip!

I had a 4 series that had frameless doors (and now the 2). The windows only ever failed to drop in icy conditions but the door anlways opened. Occasionally windows would freeze to the car but a bit of common sense (use of antifreeze spray) and they would unstick. Side windows are surprisingly hard to break. Even if they froze solid to the car, the rubber seal would rip before the window would break.
In winter, a little smear of gummi pflege on the door seals will keep all that in check.
