I highly recommend this easy 15 minute DIY for anyone who's been wondering "Why they can't drive a manual anymore...".
Had a 328xi friend describe his 'issue' with the clutch. Drove my CDV-less all but 15 feet, and said 'Now I see the problem.' Best/easiest mod ever.

I've seen the DIY but was wondering how much mechanical ability do you really need?
1- Knowing which end of a screwdriver to use? 2- Lefty loosey, Righty tighty? 3- Changing oil yourself? 4- Rebuilding your tranny?

The more that I keep reading about this, the more that I want to do this mod. I have always hated driving cars with CDV's, and the only thing that had me against doing this mod was bleeding the clutch, but that doesn't seem like its too hard to do. So did you just remove the CDV and reconnect the hose or did you replace it with a dummy CDV?

Its all easy, except for bleeding the clutch, which is easy, but I had a friend who's a fanastic mechanic do it (an Audi Master Mech, in fact).

So how exactly do you bleed the clutch? Anyone want to list some steps? I would assume that you would open up the fluid reservoir, put a tube on the bleeder valve spout into a cup with some brake fluid, open up the bleeder valve a little bit and then pump the clutch pedal. Anyone have some advice?... i've never done this before.

Clutch bleeding:
To remove large quantities of bubbles I do it indentical to brakes: 1-Pump the clutch 2-Open the bleeder valve (With the transparent hose attached) 3-When no more bubbles are visible stop pumping but leave the clutch pedal pressed. 4-Close bleeder valve. 5-Remove foot from pedal For the last few bubbles do the following 3 or 4 times: 1a-Pump the clutch pedal 8 to 10 times and leave the clutch pressed. 2a-Open the bleeder valve and see the fluid flow 3a-Close the bleeder valve when fluid stops running 4a-Remove foot from clutch pedal 5a-Go back to step 1a Always check that you have enough fluid in the reservoir as the clutch line is connected higher than the brake ones. |

So what would happen if you were not to bled it, ie clamp the hose off, remove CDV, replace with dummy one and reconnect then unclam hose? Would the air bubbles eventually work their way out? Or is that a Huge no no?

hydraulic fluis is hydraulic fluid because it doesnt compress, so force at once location is totally transfered to another, nice because it can be done through hoses and routed at weird angles and location that cant be directly connected
air on the other hand compresses, a lot so instead of your foot pushing the clutch apart, its going to be compressing air bubbles instead

I've been reading about the CDV removal a lot, but still wondering if removing it can cause the tranny damage (at least in cases when the clutch is dropped at high RPMs). Does anyone have any first hand experience with that meaning any clutch/tranny problem after the CDV removal? Will I need to shift super-smoothly with the CDV removed to avoid the damage that CDV was intended to guard against in the first place?

The other way to bleed the clutch is to go to the part store and by a vacume pump brake bleeder. You attach a hose to the bleeder valve, open it and and begin to pump the vacume pump. Keep pumping until you see no bubbles coming out the bleeder valve then close the valve and your done.
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...5&autoview=sku Some times you can find them cheaper. For someone who does their own work this is a definite tool to have. It saved getting brake fuild getting all over things, and it does not require two people. |
