Need to replace rear brakes soon? What to buy?
According to my onboard computer on my dash, it says that I'm due for new brakes in 8000 miles. BMW recommended new Rotors and pads. Instead of having them replace my brakes, I was planning on replacing them myself.
Question 1 - Would I need to replace the rotors as well as the pads? Or can I bring in my rotors and get them turned? Question 2 - What type of rotors and pads would you recommend (I dont plan on racing, I would prefer pads that has less brake dust. BMW pads dusts like CRAZY) Question 3 - Best place to buy my brake components? |

BMW does not turn rotors they only replace as new. You can maybe get a shop to turn them but honestly I would not.
You can just replace the pads. The hawk ceramic are our most popular seller as they minimize brake dust as stop as good or better then stock. I would also change the fluid as believe it or not next to pads the fluid makes the most difference. I recommend Motul. Best place is from us of course.... |

1) With BMW OEM rotors, yes, you need to. After one set of pads, they are worn to the point where you cannot safely cut them and will need new rotors.
2) I prefer OEM pads, because they have a better initial feel, response, and lower noise than ceramic. Ceramic pads will dust less, and will fair better on a road course as they are more resillient to fading however. Around the street/on the strip, OEM pads are fine. 3) I'm doing a complete brake overhaul this week, and ordered my parts from Turner Motorsport. I also bought stainless lines and fluid. Get fluid if you haven't flushed yours in at most two years. |
